Two Derby companies have been shortlisted in a national award held to recognise innovation in the restaurant sector after they worked together to create the UK’s smartest street food venue in the heart of the city.

Scenariio and The Chocolate Factory have been announced among a host of industry-leading names as a finalist in the Best Use of Technology category of the Restaurant Marketer and Innovator Awards, with the winner set to be announced this week at a ceremony in London.

The annual awards are held to recognise the growing importance of marketing, innovation and strategy in the restaurant and food service sector, recognising the people whose work defines the future of eating out.

Scenariio is based at The Chocolate Factory, in Siddals Road, and was shortlisted after installing a host of high-tech data sensors, an intelligent lighting system, people counters and security cameras throughout the venue, which hosts social functions and is the venue for Derby’s hugely popular Bustler Market.

The tech brings together a host of important data, including how many people are on site at any one time at the venue, which has three separate indoor rooms and an outdoor space, as well as temperature readings and information on the air quality.

The sensors feed into a bespoke dashboard which gives a real-time view of the occupancy and environmental conditions in the building, while the lighting system means that each individual light in the venue is controlled by the operator’s mobile phone, so that they can be dimmed accordingly when football matches are being screened or in areas of the venue which are empty.

From an operational point of view, the system helps staff to ensure their customers are safe and accounted for, to know that the venue is secure when it’s not in use and help the operators control their energy usage and lower their running costs.

Rob Pritchard, owner and managing director of Scenariio, said:

“We’re really proud to have been nominated for this award and being part of creating the smartest street food experience in the UK, while showing the sector how technology can help them improve their customer experience and increase efficiency.

“These are difficult times for the hospitality sector, but we believe that those venues which embrace new technology like this will prosper in the long run.

“From Day One our sensors and cameras helped the team at The Chocolate Factory better understand their venue from the customer’s point of view and that helped them make a host of positive changes, while helping them to make savings and reduce their carbon footprint.”

Liv Pritchard, director of The Chocolate Factory, said:

“Being nominated for any award is always brilliant recognition of what we do, but this one is special as it highlights our partnership with Scenariio on using technology to deliver an outstanding customer experience.

“Scenariio have helped us with every new fit-out we’ve done and their tech will continue to be a vital part of making us as efficient as possible whilst delivering a safe, secure and comfortable experience for our customers.“

Scenariio has previously carried out work on behalf of Gymshark, Severn Trent Water and Tarmac and its work has never been more in demand, thanks to the growing need for organisations and landlords to ensure that their premises meet environmental standards, save money and make them more pleasant environments for those who use them.
