A Barratt and David Wilson Homes employee and her mother have knitted 400 poppies to raise money for the Royal British Legion for Armistice Day (11th November).

Dawn Mellors – who works as PA to the Sales Director at the developer’s divisional office in Nottingham – has been knitting and selling the poppies to help raise funds for Barratt and David Wilson Homes’ November charity, the Royal British Legion.

The charity has over 40,000 volunteers across the UK, all collecting donations towards the annual Poppy Appeal supporting the Armed Forces community.

Dawn (49) said:

“I knew I could play a big part in our fundraising for the Royal British Legion by doing something I enjoy. I also love poppies – so much so that I recently adopted a rescue kitten and named her Poppie!

“I spent a couple of weeks making the poppies in my spare time during evenings and weekends in September. My mum, Gail, is retired so she has been helping to make them too as and when she could over the same period.

“I thoroughly enjoyed knitting the poppies, so I knitted a few extra and gave them to a local veteran who has a stall in Aldi next door to our office – he was so grateful and sold them pretty much straight away so this has helped with his fundraising for the Royal British Legion too.”

Dawn has been able to raise more than £200 for the charity so far through collections held at Barratt and David Wilson Homes’ office on Mellors Way.

The knitted poppies are being sold at various locations, including the Barratt and David Wilson Homes office, and The Soldiers and Sailors social club at 421 Tamworth Road in Long Eaton.

Dawn added:

“I’m so pleased that the poppies have been very popular this year. Many supporters are accessorising them by pinning them to their clothing, and I’ve done a couple stitched on headbands and hair bobbles. I’ve also seen my colleague’s son wearing his proudly on his school rucksack.”

Barratt and David Wilson Homes pledges to match the total funds raised by Dawn with its own donation.

Mark Cotes, Managing Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes North Midlands, said:

“We are delighted to be backing Dawn and the Royal British Legion with this excellent and creative way of fundraising.

“The poppies have gone down such a treat, and we’d like to thank all who have helped to support such a wonderful cause during this time of reflection and remembrance.”

The developer has installed poppies on lampposts across its Nottinghamshire developments, and is encouraging visitors and residents to walk past the poppies and think about all those who served in conflicts across the world.
