Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland team up with Leicester Giving Day to launch “Hug In A Hamper” campaign

Local charity, Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland are marking Leicester Giving Day by asking members of the public to donate a “Hug in a Hamper” and drop it off at Fosse Park’s Food Central location between 10am-4pm on Saturday 19th November.

The hampers will be distributed to local vulnerable older people throughout the city and county and are designed to lift older people’s spirits during the coming winter months.

Tony Donovan Executive Director, Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland said

“Messages being communicated by national and local media about rising energy prices are affecting local older people who are becoming increasingly concerned about how the energy crisis is going to impact their lives. By receiving a hug in a hamper older people will feel that they have not been forgotten, and it acts as a reminder that the charity is here to support older people facing crisis. We are hoping that these hampers prompt local people to reach out to us if they need help.”

Leicester Giving Day’s aim is to provide an opportunity to bring the city and county together creating new and exciting partnerships while celebrating what makes Leicester special. Fosse Park’s Centre Manager, Adrian said

“Supporting both Leicester Giving Day and an important charity such as Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is so important to us. Working together with a local charity and helping all our communities is essential to making sure that no one slips through the net this winter.”

Stacey Wragg, Director of Leicester Giving & Embark CSR said

“Having Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland on board with Leicester Giving Day is vital for the city as it will raise the awareness of such an important cause that effects many families & communities. Giving back and making a difference is the backbone of the day and supporting such a charity that helps so many people in need is essential. Either donations or delivering a ‘Hug in a Hamper’ will go towards keeping everyone safe during this hard winter.”

It’s easy to get involved, the charity is asking members of the public to fill a box with warm items that would benefit an older person or donate £10 directly.

If you can’t make it to Fosse Park, the hampers can be dropped off at any local Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland shop or resource centre by 18th November 2022. A full list of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland shops can be found at https://www.ageuk.org.uk/leics/shops/.
