Space Park Leicester to open doors at a series of events next month

Space Park Leicester will open it’s doors to schools and members of the public at a series of events taking place next month to celebrate the first ever Space Park Open Art Exhibition.

Hundreds of entries depicting various scenes including animals, astronauts and galaxies have been submitted for the inaugural “Space: Science and Nature” exhibition, which will feature the best 30 entries as well as the work of Leicestershire artists Matthew Turner, known for his fine art space paintings and Loz Atkinson, a multidisciplinary artist.

School workshops will take place on Monday, October 3, 4 and 5 with members of the public invited to view and snap up some of the impressive entries on the 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 October.

Matthew Turner, said:

“I love Space, travel and adventure. Over the last 20 years I have taken every opportunity to travel and explore. I cycled across America, Iceland and Europe and mountain biked in the Andes and the Amazon. I have also ridden my motorcycle to the Arctic, all in the name of personal exploration, adventure and inspiration. It is truly fitting to be able to display my work at Space Park Leicester and I look forward to joining Loz and the other artists in this celebration of Space.”

Following the success of last year’s event, local residents, organisations, families and businesses have another opportunity to view the work of the £100 million science-driven hub at an informal community day, featuring talks and activities as well as the opportunity to view the exhibition, on Monday, October 17.

Artwork can be purchased with no commission fees.

Alex Wheldon, Head of Strategic Communications and Marketing at Space Park Leicester, said: “We are delighted to be able to invite the local community to come and take a look around our fantastic facilities, learn about some of the exciting projects taking place here and to view and purchase some of the impressive entries of our first art exhibition.

“The October events, mark our involvement in World Space Week (4 -10 October), the largest space event on Earth. We invite people to join us in celebrating our growing presence not only in the city of Leicester but the region and UK as a whole, in doing so we want the local community to gain an understanding of the work going on here and learn about what Space Park Leicester has to offer.”

Space Park Leicester has been designed to support increased collaboration between University of Leicester researchers and educators and the private sector, creating high quality knowledge-based jobs, building the skills base through training, and contributing to economic growth and resilience of the economy.

The project is led by the University of Leicester in partnership with Leicester City Council and the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP).

World Space Week is the largest space event on Earth. It is an international celebration of the contribution of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition.  World Space Week consists of a myriad of space-related events held by space agencies, aerospace companies, schools, planetaria, museums, astronomy clubs, and others in a common timeframe to achieve greater student and public impact through synchronization.
