Leicester School Awarded Prestigious Quality Mark Award

New College Leicester has been recognised, with distinction, for the quality of its Physical Education and Sports programme.

As millions across the UK tuned in to watch the Commonwealth Games, a Leicester secondary school has been awarded a prestigious Quality Mark in recognition of the exceptional standard of its Physical Education and Sports Programme.

New College Leicester, a secondary school located in the New Parks area of the city, has been awarded the new accolade by the Association for Physical Education (afPE) in recognition of the school’s commitment to its pupils’ health and wellbeing. Through excellent teaching and the provision of first rate facilities, such as an outdoor cycle track and one of the best indoor gymnastics areas in the UK, New College puts physical and mental health at the heart of its education philosophy.

Jane Brown, Principal of New College Leicester comments:

“We believe that physical activity is essential if children are to do well in school. New College takes a ‘whole person’ approach to education and we value creative subjects, sports and PE highly as they help our students to flourish in other subjects, and as people.

“We want our students to leave New College as well rounded individuals capable of making their way in the world and being an asset to employers and the local community. Encouraging every aspect of their development is fundamental to that. Our sports facilities and our staff provide an inspiring landscape for our students to develop in and they are hugely popular across all age levels.”

The afPE Quality Mark is highly regarded and recognises the crucial role that Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) plays in the lives of children, as well as how it impacts on whole school improvement.

Assessed by a panel of former teachers and experts in the teaching of PE following an extensive self-review and evaluation process, New College was praised for its quality of teaching, curriculum provision, leadership and management. Specifically, the validator highlighted excellent planning by all teaching staff, a good understanding of what should be taught, a varied and balanced curriculum and high-quality PE facilities.

Sophie Newman, Director of Learning, Liz Clark, Head of Department and Jane Brown, the school’s Principal, were also praised for their extensive subject knowledge, clear vision and the outstanding work that they undertake on a daily basis.

The afPE Quality Mark Award will help to raise the school’s profile – both locally and nationally – and further promotes the importance of PE as a subject matter. Providing a platform for sharing success, the recognition identifies where New College Leicester is now in terms of PESSPA achievement and the direction that it’s heading for the future.

Jane Brown adds:

“We are absolutely delighted to have secured this accreditation, it’s an amazing achievement for everybody involved and truly a team effort.  It is a testament to the hard work and determination that the New College team deliver on a daily basis, and I couldn’t be prouder.”
