Cathedral Quarter celebrates Sadler Gate with a street party

A party to celebrate the history of Sadler Gate takes place next month – and an appeal has gone out to Derby people for help!

Derby Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District (BID) is appealing for photographs of Sadler Gate in bygone days so they can be displayed in a shop window at the event on Saturday, July 16.

Do you have pictures of brave souls racing down the narrow street on Sadler Gate in wheelbarrows?

Did you take photographs of your mates taking part in the ghastly eating competitions with cat food and eggs on Sadler Gate?

Have you got snaps of when you enjoyed a pint or a meal in one of the many pubs or restaurants on Sadler Gate?

The Cathedral Quarter BID is keen to see pictures from any of these events as well as photographs from the past and nostalgic snaps that include old businesses on Sadler Gate.

July’s event celebrates ‘Everything Sadler Gate’ and will include DJ’s, music, food, drink, and shopping. There will also be face painting and dancing – with the celebrations stretching right into the evening. During the afternoon, there will be two, free-to-attend, historical tours of the area hosted by Richard Felix.

It’s the first time the Cathedral Quarter BID has organised an event to celebrate Sadler Gate, but organisers are hoping it could be an annual thing.

Martin Langsdale, Chair of the Cathedral Quarter BID, is already looking forward to the Sadler Gate celebration and says it will give shoppers an extra something to enjoy.

He said:

“The BID wanted to celebrate Sadler Gate and create an event that welcomes visitors to the area. No doubt, people will love seeing all the old photographs displayed on Sadler Gate and will enjoy the bustling party atmosphere. Everyone is welcome and we would love to create a fun day out.”

Copies of your photographs can be sent to the Cathedral Quarter BID team. A selection of the best photographs will be displayed on Sadler Gate during July’s event. You can email them to enquiries@derbycathedralquarter.co.uk
