Ex Derby County football legend, Roger Davies, joins me&dee charity in going an extra mile for ‘Miles for Smiles’!

me&dee, their supported families and supporters take on the extra mile, to show their gratitude to the Miles for Smiles team and are pushing for schools to join in this summer!

Miles for Smiles (MFS) was founded by Callum Worker, 6 years ago. Over the years, Callum has formed a team of young individuals to join him on his charity challenges for me&dee. In 2021, MFS raised £51,000 after a gruelling 280 mile hike! This August, the MFS are back with their biggest challenge to date. They will be walking, 440 miles over 16 days, stopping at 33 football grounds.

me&dee supports children and their families who are going through difficult and uncertain times. They are gifted with memories they can treasure, never losing sight of what truly matters. They have a beautiful luxury lodge at Sherwood Forest where the families they support, can spend time together in a quiet and tranquil setting. It’s a place where families can leave the hospital visits behind, a break from the lovely doctors and nurses who look after them, giving them time to be a family again.

On 24th April, Maria Hanson MBE (founder of me&dee charity) and Roger Davies lead the mile walk around Gresley Rovers F.C, surrounded by all of the charity's supporters. Some of the children that me&dee support have short or uncertain futures ahead of them but they were there, determined to complete 1 mile for MFS. Without the support of MFS, these children wouldn’t get the truly remarkable help that they receive and the memories they make.

“We have always been incredibly grateful to the MFS team; the difference they make to our charity is truly humbling. Every year they put themselves through blood, sweat and tears to help us to help families, that are going through uncertain times. Last year we showed as much support as we possibly could but it never felt quite enough for what they deserve.

So… this year, myself, some of the children we support, their families, supporters and the Derby legend, Roger Davies, walked an extra mile for ‘Miles for Smiles’, at the MFS team’s local football ground. Sadly, I have several disabilities which have resulted in 18 rounds of surgery and a lifetime with walking aids. However, this did not stop me! I walked laps of the ground to show my gratitude to the MFS team (with my walking frame, much like Captain Tom!). This was incredibly challenging but it helped to be surrounded by so much support!“

“After following me&dee’s journey for many years, I was honoured to be asked to join them with their mile challenge on Sunday. To be stood on a small football ground, brought it all back to me - where it all began! Maria and the team were truly inspiring and I’d like to say a huge well done to all who participated! me&dee really do go that extra mile in everything that they do; supporting children with often last memories. I’m looking forward to
continuing to follow me&dee’s journey and supporting with future events!”

me&dee are reaching out to schools across the midlands to join in and walk just one extra mile to support the MFS team on their 440 miles! This walk can be completed anywhere in the world between now and the summer holidays. Each student will receive an ‘I walked an extra mile for Miles for Smiles’ sticker for all their hard work. What a great way for peers to work together, encourage each other and keep active!
