Auction Lands Big Payday For Demolition Firm Ahead of Fleet Expansion

An auction of used plant equipment has landed a big pay day for a family owned Nottinghamshire demolition firm that is already predicting one of its best years ever.

Total Reclaims Demolition, based in Hucknall, decided to have a major clear out of hundreds of spare items of used plant and machinery to make way for new equipment and a fleet of 10 new Transit vans.

The 326-lot auction, held at its Wigwam Lane headquarters on February 5, was expected to make in the region of £300,000, but instead returned a whopping £400,000 for the company coffers.

Items sold included excavators, diggers and an articulated dump truck, as well as old steel props, digger buckets, hitches and compressors.

The sale represented the latest in a long line of successes for the firm, which has helped to transform Nottingham’s skyline in its 25 years in business.

Currently involved in a contract for HS2 in Birmingham and demolition works for Bildurn on planned student accommodation in Huntingdon Street, Nottingham, Total Reclaims Demolition employs 80 staff and turns over close to £10m.

Its bright start to 2022 is a far cry from the concerned phone calls received by joint owner Melvyn Cross Junior when the auction was announced.

Melvyn said:

“We had a number of calls from concerned parties who wrongly thought that we were selling equipment because we were having financial problems. When a company sells off equipment, people’s ears tend to prick up - but the reality couldn’t be more different.

“Our order pipeline is probably the best it’s ever been, so we decided it was the perfect time to upgrade our plant and other machinery, giving us an even better opportunity to capitalise on the high-profile projects that are coming through.

“We’re still going from strength to strength and 2022 is panning out to be an amazing year for us.”

Part of the company’s refresh includes the imminent arrival of a fleet of 10 new Ford Transit vans for transporting crews to multiple demolition sites each day.

Andrew Long, commercial sales executive at motor dealer Sandicliffe, in Nottingham, said any “double-figure” purchase of vehicles was a significant deal for his firm.

“I’ve dealt with Total Reclaims for a number of years, and it’s one of only two or three companies that orders in double figures on a fairly regular basis,” said Andrew.

“I’m delighted that Melvyn and his team have started the year so positively.”

He estimated that, with the latest purchase, it meant Total Reclaims Demolition had ordered close to 50 vehicles from Sandicliffe in the past five years alone.

Total Reclaims Demolition is one of the largest demolition firms in the Midlands and operates throughout the UK. Its long list of key clients includes Balfour Beatty, Bowmer & Kirkland, Nottingham City Homes and Ikea.

Founded in 1993 by Melvyn, his brother Mark and dad Melvyn Senior, the company now has a head office spanning over 7,000 sq.ft and, true to its origins as a family run company, employs more than 40 family members among its 80-strong workforce.
