Nottingham College secures 1.2m fund to invest in science

Nottingham College has been awarded a 1.2m capital grant by the Office for Students to invest in its Higher Education (HE) science provision, including a new science and innovation centre. 

Planning is already underway to build the new Centre, based at the College’s City Hub, and will include new laboratories and purpose-built higher-level technical facilities for subjects such as biology, chemistry, forensics and dental technologies. 

Set to open in 2022/23, the department, its students, and local employers, will benefit from a suite of brand new industrial-grade machinery and equipment, including a bench-top NMR scanner, a high-performance liquid chromatogram, UV, IR and Mass spectrometers, and for Forensic Science, bespoke ‘crime scene houses’, a blood spatter room and state-of-the-art fingerprint analysis equipment. 

Damian Fidler, Nottingham College Head of Higher Education and International, said:

“We are delighted to have been awarded this funding, which will enable us to invest further in our HE provision. The new equipment and facilities put us on a par with industry and gives our students training opportunities that even rivals some universities. 

“Nottingham College is proud of its ability to help students from widening participation backgrounds and adults enter HE, and now opportunities in science-based programmes which, traditionally, have been beyond the reach of many.   

“With this funding, we can support local employers to further careers for newcomers and those already employed to achieve Level 4 and 5 qualifications to fulfil emerging job roles. Plus, it extends the potential for our current Level 3 students in these disciplines to learn and aspire to progress to university-levels within the College itself.”
