Lubrizol inspires its staff to lead healthy lives by supporting Derbyshire’s young athletes

A Derbyshire firm has underlined its commitment to helping its own staff stay fit and healthy by showing its support for the county’s next generation of athletes.

Lubrizol, based in Hazelwood, has signed up as a silver sponsor for the Derbyshire Institute of Sport, which provides which provides a host of sport science services to aspiring young athletes, sports teams and club members across the country.

The company made the commitment as part of its own community activity and as a way of showcasing its mission to ensure that its own staff are encouraged to live a healthy and active life themselves.

For years Lubrizol has created a healthy sporting culture by encouraging staff to stay fit and socialise through activities such as running, walking and playing football together, and often brings them together to take on charity challenges.

These include the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, a sponsored rowing machine challenge and various running events throughout the year, including the Derby 10k and Derby Half Marathon road races and the Continental Tyres Thunder Run, a 24-hour running challenge which takes place at Catton Park each July.

Among the staff who has taken part in a number of events down and the years and has welcomed Lubrizol’s new sponsorship is Lubrizol technical manager Joby Winn, who says that balancing of work and sport has a host of benefits.

He said: “I’ve always enjoyed sport, especially football, but taking part with workmates in something like the Thunder Run is really enjoyable because it’s a great way to get to know people who you might not usually spend time with.

“That, and the other activities which the company encourages us to get involved in, is really good when it comes to boosting everyone’s mental and physical health and it’s good to see Lubrizol going the extra step to sponsor the Derbyshire Institute of Sport to ensure that other people can benefit from sport as well.”

Derbyshire Institute of Sport was founded following the 2012 Olympics to offer a one-stop-shop offering practical services for young athletes, including nutrition, psychology, mentoring and physiotherapy.

Chloe Maudsley, managing director of DIS, said: “We’re really grateful to Lubrizol for helping us and our athletes by agreeing to become silver sponsors.

“There is a lot of synergy between the qualities that athletes need to adopt and the world of business, such as resilience, communication and motivation, so we hope this will become a partnership where both parties can benefit from each other.”
