Permagroup pledges support for children's charity for second year running

Derbyshire-based Permagroup has presented a cheque for £2,000 to its partner charity, Heart Link, for the second year running.

The regional charity is particularly close to the company’s heart as it provided support and care to managing director Adrian Buttress’ granddaughter when she had lifesaving heart surgery just days after she was born.

River Mai Bishop, now two years old, underwent a major seven-and-a-half-hour operation to enlarge part of her heart, the aorta, the main artery that sends blood around your body, at the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre at Glenfield when she was just eight days old and recently underwent additional surgery in November 2021.

Adrian said:

“We are delighted to give another donation to this wonderful charity for another year. The support we have received from Heart Link over the past few years has been truly amazing, and we hope that these donations go just a small way to showing how grateful we are for everything they’ve done to help River and our family.

“River’s latest operation, while it was a lot more minor than her first, was a reminder of just how far she’s come since she had her first surgery in July 2019, and that’s down to the incredible work of those at Glenfield Hospital and Heart Link for guiding us through the past two and a half years. Despite only having surgery a matter of weeks ago, River’s defied the odds again by already recovering and making a bounding return to nursery!”

Heart Link was formed in 1981 as a support group for parents and families with children suffering from a heart defect. Over the years, the charity has become increasingly committed to improving facilities for young patients at Glenfield Hospital and their families. Since it was set up, the charity has collected and raised more than four million pounds, which has been used to fund projects and much-needed medical equipment at the hospital.

Shirley Barnes, treasurer of Heart Link, said:

“Lots of the patients who are in the care of the hospital will have palliative care all their lives, so we want to provide them with a pleasant and comfortable home away from home to make their stays that little bit easier. That’s why generous donations from organisations like PermaGroup are pivotal in allowing us to continue our vital work and we’re incredibly grateful to Adrian and the team for their continued support.”

This donation marks the end of PermaGroup’s most successful year to date, with four consecutive record-breaking months from January to April, a first in the company’s history, as well as November – resulting in an overall annual turnover increase of 37.5% when compared to 2020, which was previously PermaGroup’s most successful year.
