YMCA Derbyshire excited to join Love Business Expo

YMCA Derbyshire is looking forward to attending the Love Business EXPO this week in Loughborough.

The charity provides accommodation and support to young people who find themselves temporarily without a place to live. Each year, the organisation accommodates over 300 individuals.

The main campus in which 87 individuals live is on London Road, just outside of Derby City Centre. A further 106 individuals live off-site in ‘move on’ housing which comprises of shared houses and flats across Derby City and Derbyshire.

Young people often arrive at YMCA Derbyshire from chaotic backgrounds and most have experienced trauma in their childhood. The charity aims to empower each individual to achieve their dreams and fulfil their potential. This is done through one-to-one tailored support, health and wellbeing activities and through volunteering and work placement opportunities.

Support is personalised around each individual. Provisions are adapted to meet the needs of those utilising the services of the YMCA. Many young people are experiencing acute mental health difficulties so YMCA Derbyshire have an in-house Therapeutic Counsellor available to those who need it.

One of the young people who recently benefitted from this service said:

“Now I feel like I want to stay alive. I know I am capable of being positive. My life isn’t so negative. I am actually thinking about what I might like to do in the future.”

YMCA Derbyshire also has a training and education arm. YMCA Key College. Through this provision, the charity provides accredited vocational training courses to over 150 young people each year, many of whom have found mainstream education unsuitable. This can mostly be due to learning or behavioural difficulties or mental ill-health. Courses include hospitality and catering, uniformed services, retail services, childcare and many more. We are proud of what our young learners achieve and the journey they go on at YMCA Key College. Many graduates progress to further education and/or employment.

The team at YMCA Derbyshire are very much looking forward to attending Love Business EXPO and meeting as many businesses as possible. Please do head to their stand, number R5 for a chat and the option to learn how you could change the lives of young people in Derby and Derbyshire.
