Nottingham business tops the class after online programme boost

A Nottingham tutoring business is celebrating a bumper festive season of trading after taking part in a free, online educational programme for people in Nottingham who want to start a new online business or grow an existing one.

The Tutor Boss is an independently owned tutoring company, run by entrepreneur Krissi Saccoh (48) from Bingham. It is one of over 400,000 businesses in the UK to take part in the Amazon Small Business Accelerator programme.

The Tutor Boss teaches both primary and secondary school students, offering specialised services for GCSE students and pupils with special educational needs.

Founder Krissi, who was a head teacher at a Nottingham school, had tutored on and off throughout her career. However, the first lockdown in 2020 gave Krissi the push she needed to leave her job and start her own tutoring business.

Krissi is clinically vulnerable, meaning that working in schools during the pandemic could have been dangerous to her health. With more time on her hands due to isolation, she decided to take the plunge and launched The Tutor Boss.

Krissi said: “It was really the pandemic that forced me to start out on my own. Because of my health, I was told I couldn’t come back to work for the foreseeable future, and I thought to myself, what am I going to do? I gathered myself together and said, ‘Right, now is the time to do this!’”

To help her with her business journey, Krissi attended the Amazon Small Business Accelerator. She said:

“I started looking for business courses and found the Amazon Small Business Accelerator. Initially, I was a bit sceptical because it looked swanky and I didn’t believe it was free, but it was!”

“I knew I needed to prepare myself for this new venture because I’m not very tech-savvy, but the Amazon Small Business Accelerator helped me to plan everything I needed to get the business off the ground. I attended virtual bootcamps featuring sessions on marketing, which helped me to identify what made my business different to other tutoring businesses.”

Krissi said the Amazon Small Business Accelerator is also a good place to get information on the financial side of starting a business, adding:

“The accelerator is very organised and provides a step-by-step guide that includes all areas of business. Some things I already knew, like having to register as a business and the tax I would have to pay, but the accelerator covered all the other essentials.

“Some things were all new to me. At nearly 50 years old, I’m not great with social media, so learning how to use that to further my business was especially beneficial as I’m able to reach more students across the UK.”

She added:

“The whole programme is like a work record that we would have in school which focused me and kept me organised. I still go back now to do webinars to refresh my knowledge.”

The Tutor Boss now has five staff members and Krissi has a much better work-life balance than in her previous role. She benefits from being able to choose her hours which means she can spend more quality time with her children.
