Rainbows benefits from £100k makeover

Bathrooms at Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People have undergone a £100,000 state-of the art makeover thanks to Severn Trent’s Community Fund and supporters.

The donations funded the charity’s “Wonders of Water Project”, a scheme to improve shower and bathroom facilities for over 300 life-limited children and young people at Rainbows, focussing specifically on refurbishing three bathrooms and two shower rooms.

The spaces now have some of the most up to date equipment as well as light, sound and aroma systems, making bathing a truly immersive multi-sensory experience.

Severn Trent Community Fund, which awards grant money to improve the three elements of community wellbeing – people, places and environment – donated £74,651 towards the project. The rest was made up from Rainbows’ supporter donations.

The bath and shower rooms are an essential part of the care Rainbows provides and need to be adaptable to different needs. These facilities are vital not only in terms of hygiene and comfort, but also, they are therapeutically beneficial.

Anne-Marie Rosak, Head of Nursing and Clinical Operations at Rainbows, said:

“We are immensely grateful to Severn Trent Community Fund and our donors for supporting the refurbishment of our bathrooms and shower rooms.

“Children and young people at Rainbows will be able to enjoy all the benefits of these fantastic new facilities, which will help them by easing pain and distress and offering a sense of freedom and relaxation.

“Many of us take a bath for granted. But for those that rely on Rainbows, the experience is a special one and the sensory additions can make it all the more so. We have the capability to add aromatherapy through the bath’s aeration system. Lighting within the water and ambient music all create an amazing environment for the children and young people, giving them a truly immersive and multi-sensory experience. This can provide a relaxing environment where pain can be eased and the senses stimulated in a positive and rewarding way.”

Sue Heyes, Fund Officer at Severn Trent, added:

“It’s a privilege to support local charities like Rainbows Hospice. We hope these new and improved bathroom facilities will make a meaningful difference for the children and young people who’ll be using them.

“Projects like this is what our Community Fund is all about – supporting people on our doorstep who need it the most.”
