Davpack walk 250 miles to give people with limb differences the ultimate leg up in sub-Saharan Africa

This November, Davpack is working alongside UK charity Legs4Africa to raise money to support amputees in The Gambia.

Davpack, a leading mail order packaging company based in Derby, has been working with Bristol-based charity Legs4Africa since 2019. Legs4Africa recycle prosthetic legs that would otherwise end up in landfill. They ship the parts out to mobility centres in sub-Saharan Africa so they can be used to build or repair legs for people who otherwise may never walk again. Davpack has been providing Legs4Africa with the packaging to ship these legs safely and securely across the continent. In the last two years Davpack has directly helped to get 1,540 legs out to amputees across seven countries in Africa.

Employees from Davpack are challenging themselves with a strenuous walk to provide additional monetary support for Legs4Africa! The team will be walking 250 miles over the course of the month - marking the distance between the two company’s offices which are in Derby and Bristol. They were inspired to launch this fundraiser after reading about the charity’s Leg Up campaign. Through Leg Up, Legs4Africa aims to raise a total of £100,000 to ensure they can continue their work in The Gambia for the next two years.

As well as sending recycled prosthetic legs, the charity supports people in The Gambia to work through the trauma of limb loss. Through peer counselling initiatives, and mobile physio and maintenance teams they are working hard to ensure amputees across the country have access to the support they need in order to get back on their feet. Without the charity, it’s estimated that 80% of amputees in The Gambia would not receive any emotional or physical rehabilitation support.

Annabelle Earps, Digital Marketing Executive at Davpack said:

“The more we learned about the charity and what they do for amputees across Africa – both mentally and physically fascinated us and we wanted to do all that we could to help. We want to give in any way we possibly can, and we can do this by providing packaging, encouraging people to donate and spreading the word about the cause. With Leg Up being Legs4Africa’s biggest ever fundraising campaign, we really wanted to help them get to that £100,000 target, so hopefully ourselves and other companies can contribute to them getting there!”

Leg Up is a match funded campaign, meaning all public and company donations can be doubled, thanks to an anonymous long-term friend of the charity. Legs4Africa relies on public support and, as well as raising enough money to continue their vital work in The Gambia, they hope this campaign and Davpack’s fundraiser can help to shine a light on limb loss and the challenges faced by amputees in sub-Saharan Africa.

Evie Dickinson, Fundraising and Communications Manager at Legs4Africa said:

“Davpack has been incredible to us. It’s so refreshing to be working with a company that is so human and that literally can’t do enough to support the cause. Their walk is not only helping to support our latest fundraising campaign, Leg Up, but it’s also really helping to raise awareness of who we are and what we are about.”
