50th birthday celebrations set to get underway for Idlewells Shopping Centre

Sutton-in-Ashfield-based shopping centre Idlewells is planning some big celebrations this November as it prepares to mark its 50th birthday - with a retro theme and range of events set to be held to commemorate the occasion.

Idlewells was established in 1971 and sits at the heart of the community of Sutton-in-Ashfield. The name derives from the manufacturing district of the town and takes inspiration from the nearby River Idle.

Today, the centre boasts a number of high street retailers including Boots, Holland & Barrett, JD Sports and Specsavers, as well as independent stores and eateries. Idlewells is also famous for its central clock which hangs above Cafe Moda - a focal point for the local community.

To commemorate its 50th year, Idlewells is throwing a special 70s themed birthday party on Saturday 13th November, which will include a special appearance from the Wombles, as well as a number of 70s performers. The centre will also unveil a special Idlewells clock replica birthday cake, as well as hosting an exhibition from the Sutton Living Memory Group and a children’s birthday card workshop.

For Centre Manager Chloe O’Donnell, celebrating the history and heritage of the centre is important for the town and she hopes that the day will resonate with different generations.

“Idlewells means so much to so many people, so we want the event to allow people to reflect, and look back on some special memories,”

She continues, “In 1971, the Wombles were here to mark the opening of beloved toy shop TawToys, and of course, they are synonymous with the 70s. Our performers will also fit into the feeling of nostalgia,”

“Alongside the 70s theme, we want the younger generations to feel part of the celebrations and to be able to learn more about our heritage - so our impressive replica clock cake, workshops and exhibition from the Sutton Living Memory Group should really allow people to immerse themselves in what makes Idlewells so integral to this town,”

“We can’t wait to celebrate our 50th birthday with the local community and bring everyone together for such a landmark moment” adds Chloe.
