Doing good during bad times

Over the past 18 months, the charity sector has been seen to go over and beyond to support the diverse communities in and around Leicester. Shama Women’s Centre is one of these amazing charities; having realigned our services to ensure alternative opportunities for engagement and support, our fantastic team of staff and volunteers have really led by example to diversify its provision.
We couldn’t have delivered this amazing impact without the support of some fantastic businesses in our local community. With the support of the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce colleagues, Shama reached out to the wonderful Unique Window Services Director, Atul Patel, for some help with our windows. Immediately, Atul visited the centre and arranged for one of his team to measure and order new windows for the whole building. When we asked about the cost, we were pleasantly surprised that Atul was kindly donating this support to the centre, despite the turbulence caused by the pandemic and lockdown.
The windows have now been changed, and the centre is looking much fresher and accessible. Our CEO, Khudeja Amer-Sharif said,
‘You have been so humble and modest in giving Shama your support, which has given the place a much needed uplift. It has made a huge difference to our staff and service users – we’ve received so many positive comments. Your contribution will help me and my team continue to shine light and hope for hundreds of women who see Shama as a home away from home’.
Now, we are ready to return to ‘business as usual’, with a particular focus on sustainability and development. Before the pandemic, Shama were making steps to connect with employers and employees to establish and strengthen partnerships. Our team were excited to invite some of these partners to our 35th anniversary event. We are recruiting ambassadors to support our service offering as part of their CSR activities, and look forward to announcing the date for our much awaited celebratory event in March 2022.
