Navigating Mental Health in the Workplace

Navigating Mental Health in the Workplace

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, the most common cause of longstanding absence in the UK is mental health related sickness, particularly stress related absences. Stress related absence, along with depression or anxiety accounts for a whopping 44% of work-related ill health and 54% of working days lost.

According to Shama, poor mental health is costing UK employers up to £42 billion a year. These statistics existed pre-covid so you can only imagine how those numbers have increased since the Pandemic and social distancing measures were put in place over a year ago. The implications of which are likely to resonate for a long time, as shown by health org. Having this in mind, EverythingBranded were keen to look for advice on Mental Health and how to safeguard staff members from adding to these already shocking statistics.

EverythingBranded were approached by Shama Womens Centre and offered to be one of the first companies to trial their mental health services. As part of the trial, we have accessed their free online resource as a quick go-to guide for managers to easily access. This will enable staff to better understand and recognise poor mental health in the workplace plus we have also agreed to receive an in-house mental health check. Shama will carry out a need’s assessment with our managers and HR team to create a bespoke package of support for us. They will be working with us to assess the impact of their interventions and ensure we get the best results for our staff and the business.

In addition to this, Shama have developed a range of training sessions that will be available in September, as well as coaching and support to people-managers and HR leads to ensure they are fully equipped to support their teams whilst at work. As a small charity, Shama have always focused their services on the hardest to reach, serving people who face multiple barriers. But now, they are really pushing the boat out to support as many people as possible, through interventions and support that is tailored and adaptable to you. As an ambassador of Shama, we are supporting their efforts and they are helping us to understand and support our staff better. That’s CSR at its best!

To support Shama and their endeavour to drive change within the community – beyond women’s services – EverythingBranded has donated £1000 towards the implementation of the new service. We were more than happy to collaborate with Shama, as an investment in Mental Health within the workplace, is an investment in the business.

This partnership will be ongoing until April next year, with the hopes that it is successful with the employees here and sustained by Shama.
