The First Ashby Sport Fun Day was a Great Success!

The First Ashby Sport Fun Day was a Great Success!

Ashby Sport held its first Fun Day at the Bath Grounds on Saturday 3rd July which was very well received by the community and a huge success. It attracted a large number of people of all ages to ‘have a go’ at the many sports Ashby has to offer.

MP Andrew Bridgen gave his support to the day, saying

“it should become an annual event” he continued, “the event not only promoted health and fitness in the town, it's also good for mental wellbeing and the community spirit as a whole”.

Around 27 clubs from Ashby and surrounding villages came together to showcase everything sports related within the town. From Pigeon Racing to Croquet, there were clubs represented that even people who have lived here for 40 years, didn’t know existed.

People of all ages could try out Boxing, Bowls, Football, Netball, Golf, Cricket, Zumba and Chess to name a few! The event took away the fear and barriers that often exist when wanting to try out a new sport, making it so much easier to try new things out.

Chairman of Leicestershire County Council and Ashby Town Councillor, Dan Harrison opened the event and gave his support to the day.

Cllr Harrison said:

"I feel very much a part of this as a local, but I also think it’s critical we get young people into sport.I started judo at the age of 14 and went on to be the British Champion, which means anybody can do it.I want to impress on people that they can come and “have a go”.  There are a lot of activities in Ashby people may not be aware of.”

Ashby de la Zouch Town Council has also played a major part in helping the new set-up and the town's Mayor, Rita Manning also attended the Fun Day.She said:

"It was an amazing turnout. There were so many sports clubs who came to the Bath Grounds”.She added: "New people to the town need to know what's available and it’s great that we now have an Ashby Sport website with all the information on there."

Kenny Horn, one of the main organisers of Ashby Sport said

“The main objective is to get people participating in sport, so I’m really pleased with how the event was received. Many people turned out to support their clubs and lots of the community came to have a go at something new. We’ve already had feedback from clubs that enquiries are flooding in following the event”.

Special mentions go to the Co-op and McDonald’s who kindly donated generously to the event and The Monkey Tree Restaurant, Ashby Sport’s main sponsor, without whom the promotions and eventcould not have taken place.

The Fun Day will be back again next year with potentially even more clubs showcasing what they have to offer. In the meantime, check out the website www.ashbysport.com for the contact details of all sports within the town, their latest news and how to join.
