Here’s how you can grab yourself a slice of FREE pizza from newly opened True Pizzas

A NEW YORK-style pizza outlet which caused a stir when it launched in Derby last year is giving away FREE slices of pizza to celebrate the opening of a second venue.

True Pizzas – formerly Honest Pizzas, on Manor Road, Derby – will give away 1,000 slices of doughy delight to hungry visitors to its brand-new unit in Chellaston from 11am on Saturday, July 10.

And when you’ve savoured every last mouthful, you’ll be able to treat yourself to dessert from the Project Whippy ice-cream van; the exciting ice-cream spin-off from Derby-based doughnut entrepreneurs, Project D.

Husband-and-wife Easton and Anastasia Andrea have been overwhelmed with the success of the first True Pizzas takeout, which has thrived throughout lockdown with typically 100 pizzas being made every hour on a busy Saturday night.

Easton, who also owns the popular House of Darwin gastropub in Chellaston, said:

“The people of Derby clearly love pizza – our most popular pizza is a classic pepperoni – and True Pizzas are what we believe to be the biggest pizzas you can buy from a takeout in Derby at 18-inches.

“The new, modern unit, on Riber Drive in Chellaston, is perfectly placed with neighbours including Greggs, Costa Coffee and Aldi and our head chef Richard Dean has been working hard on a new menu for the new place.”

Additions to the menu include New York-style subs, brand-new pizza-by-the-slice options, garlic knots and ‘Grandma’ slices; a distinct thick-based square pizza that originates from Long Island.

True Pizzas pride themselves on making their pizza dough and speciality sauce from scratch, on site, using mainly locally-sourced premium ingredients, while their popular soft-baked cookies – made fresh to order – are also a big hit.

The new outlet will also serve delicious thick ice-cream shakes – mixing fresh, premium vanilla ice-cream with pureed fruit, chocolate and caramel syrup and Oreo biscuits – from a specially-imported milkshake machine which Easton says is a ‘big investment’.

Easton added:

“At a time of so much uncertainty, particularly in hospitality, it is a joy to be able to expand our business and create new jobs for people in Derby.

“We have a growing, loyal client base and we pride ourselves on a personable service; we recently installed a caller ID on our phones at the Manor Road site so that we can answer the phone to our regular customers by mentioning their name.

“Those collecting pizza from our sites wait in their cars and have it delivered to them by our staff and we’ve even created personalised pizzas for our regulars. Our ethos is that we sell high-quality, New York-style pizzas to the people of Derby for a reasonable price using fresh ingredients.

“(Chef) Richard has been key to our early and current successes. We’re incredibly grateful that, a year on, he is still a vital part of the team and continues to grow with us and the business. The technique, care and pride he takes in ensuring that every single ingredient that goes into our recipies is the best is exactly what makes True Pizzas a success.

“There’s a real feel-good factor around our business. We just wanted to bring a taste of New York to Derby, people in Derby seem to love it.

“We took the leap in lockdown and we’re so glad we did. We can’t wait to see the new site grow.”
