Croots Farm Shop throws open its gates for Open Farm Sunday on 27th June

Popular Derbyshire farm shop Croots will be opening the gates to the farm on Sunday 27th June as part of a nationwide event to showcase British farming.

LEAF Open Farm Sunday is the farming industry’s national open day, with hundreds of farms throwing open their gates to give the public the chance to find out more about where their food comes from.

Among them is Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road near Duffield - the home of the award-winning Croots Farm Shop.

The farm will be open to visitors free of charge between 11am and 3.30pm on Sunday 27th June but due to Covid restrictions, tickets need to be booked in advance via the Croots Farm Shop website.

A number of activities, displays and events have been lined up to highlight what goes on behind the scenes of a farm, including sheep shearing, blacksmithing and a butchery display.

Meet the sheep and lambs and learn about them from Farmer Steve. Meet the shire horses and foal and learn about them from Farmer Jim. There will be food and drink stalls, the opportunity to look at farm machinery, take a walk along the farm’s nature trail and enjoy a BBQ.

Admission is free but Croots is asking for donations to local charities. Members of Rotary Amber Valley will be collecting for Midlands Air Ambulance and local food banks.

This will be the fifth year that Steve and Kay Croot, who run Croots Farm Shop, have taken part in Open Farm Sunday to help celebrate British farming and all that it delivers.

Kay Croot’s parents Jim and Sue Yates have lived at Farnah House Farm - a 72-acre sheep farm producing lamb for the farm shop – since the 1960s and the farm shop was opened in 2008.

Kay said:

“Open Farm Sunday is the perfect time for families to find out more about farming and how food gets from field to fork. Last year’s national event went online due to Coronavirus so we’re really looking forward to welcoming visitors in person to this year’s Open Farm Sunday here at Farnah House Farm, the home of Croots Farm Shop.

“It’s a lovely place for families to visit. We’ve got demonstrations and displays lined up and there’s the chance to get up close to lambs, our shire horses, see some of the agricultural machinery that’s used on the farm and ask questions about how the farm is run.

“Open Farm Sunday is always a great day, and we can’t wait to run it again this year. It’s free to attend but due to Covid restrictions numbers will be limited so we’ve introduced a booking system for tickets.”

The shop’s current opening hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays, while the café open hours are Monday to Saturday from 9am to 4pm and from 10am to 3.30pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
