Female Trainee Quantity Surveyor joins leading developer

Female Trainee Quantity Surveyor joins leading developer

In continuing to encourage more women into the construction industry, Barratt and David Wilson Homes has appointed a new female Trainee Quantity Surveyor at its Northampton based office.

Sarah Cartlidge, 36, joins the Commercial team and is completing the Sponsored Degree Programme over the next four years. She chose the developer in particular as she saw that its views aligned with her own: to get more females into senior roles within the sector.

Having previously worked in Commercial Property Law, the working mother found she had a passion for property, in particular new build homes.

Sarah, from Milton Keynes, is currently working on four of Barratt and David Wilson Homes’ developments alongside her degree programme, which she is completing with Sheffield Hallam University. She has a number of responsibilities, including reading through tenders, dealing with queries from contractors, and liaising with the site teams.

She said:

“I was attracted to a career with Barratt and David Wilson Homes because of their fantastic reputation as a quality housebuilder and I am thrilled to be starting my new role as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor.

“Another reason I was drawn to the company was due to its vision of closing the gender equality gap. There is a lack of women in the industry, and Barratt and David Wilson Homes is trying to challenge this.

“They are really great employers. As a working mother, they have been really flexible with childcare. This is now my second degree, but they are not concerned by age, they see you for what potential you have.

“I aspired to join a team of hardworking and dedicated individuals and there’s no better place to do this than Barratt and David Wilson Homes, they are a company that strives on quality and customer service.”

Another factor that influenced Sarah’s decision to take a role with the company was because of its prestigious reputation for both the quality of its houses to the way it looks after its staff.

She hopes to complete her degree programme, whilst also working her way up in the company.

John Dillon, Managing Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes South Midlands, said:

“We would like to welcome Sarah to the commercial team and wish her the best of luck in her career with us.

“As a leading housebuilder in the South Midlands, we pride ourselves on not only providing a first-class service for our customers, but also ensuring we look after our staff and provide opportunities to progress within the company and achieve their ambitions.

“We are deeply committed to developing raw talent and work closely with our new employees to ensure they get the best from their new role.”
