Businesses encouraged to make a difference with donations for school lunches

Derby businesses are being called upon to help a local campaign that is giving free meals to school children during half term.

Last week’s parliamentary vote saw MPs chose not to extend free school meals over half term, leaving thousands of children in Derby without lunches this week.

To help, Derby businesses have rallied together and joined a campaign led by Marcus Rashford MBE, and are now offering free lunches to Derby City school children.

The initiative is being led by Olivia Pritchard, founder of Derby’s Bustler Market, alongside Portobello, Vedi & Blondie Brownie Bakes, and they are looking to other local businesses for support.

“Since announcing we are going to be donating free lunches to those that need them, we’ve heard from quite a few local business owners saying that they’d like to do more to help so we’ve set up a JustGiving page to help raise more money,” commented Olivia.

The lunches will consist of sandwiches, a savoury snack, a brownie, juice and fruit. They can be collected from Bustler Market on John Street (DE1 2LU) between 10am and 2pm on Wednesday 28th , Thursday 29th and Friday 30th . There is no need to book, simply just turn up. The team will also be making deliveries of the lunches for larger groups which can be pre-ordered the day before and delivered by volunteers to an agreed location.

Olivia commented:

“Having seen Marcus Rashford’s amazing campaign we instantly knew we had to be involved and wanted to help get food to as many children in Derby who cannot afford lunches during school holidays. We have paired up with local Derby businesses to help provide packed lunchesand already the support has been amazing. If there are any parents who are going to struggle over the next week, we are here to help. We’re determined to show support to our community and pull together to get the children fed! The government might not be prepared to help but we are.”
