Derby law firm shortlisted for prestigious national award

Derby law firm Nelsons has been shortlisted for a national Personal Injury Award for the second consecutive year.

Nelsons’ personal injury team – which recovered £24.3 million in damages for clients between May 2019 and May 2020, marking its most successful year on record – will be hoping to scoop the prize for ‘Claimant Team of the Year’ at the awards ceremony, which takes place virtually on 1 December.

Now in its 13th year, the awards celebrate the excellence of individuals, teams and organisations specialising in the personal injury sector. Last year, Nelsons’ personal injury team was also shortlisted in the ‘Claimant Team of the Year’ category, while associate and solicitor Dianne Collins, who is a specialist in historical child abuse claims, was named ‘Claimant Lawyer of the Year’.

Julie Walker, partner who specialises in personal injury matters at Nelsons, which also has offices in Leicester and Nottingham, said:

“We’re extremely proud to have been shortlisted in these national awards; indicating the quality of our work and placing us firmly among the best in the sector nationwide.

“Personal injury is a niche and complex area of law, and our work is vital in supporting those who have experienced life-changing injuries. Our claimant team has extensive knowledge, particularly when it comes to advising on specialist areas such as abuse claims, brain and spinal injuries and clinical negligence. It is wonderful for our team to have their expertise and dedication recognised on a national stage."

Between May 2019 and 2020, Nelsons’ personal injury department secured settlements for 215 clients – averaging £113,000 per case.

Julie added:

“From reasonably modest injuries all the way through to catastrophic, life changing injuries, we’ve acted on behalf of a broad range of clients who have been injured in accidents or as a result of negligence, and been able to support them with a successful claim to help them moving forwards.”

The personal injury team is ranked Tier 1 by the Legal 500 and recommended by other professionals, including: the College of Personal Injury Lawyers, the Law Society Personal Injury Accreditation Scheme, the Law Society Clinical Negligence Panel, Headway, Spinal Injuries Association, and Action against Medical Accidents (AvMA) Specialist Clinical Negligence Panel.

Stewart Vandermark, chief executive at Nelsons, said:

“It’s fantastic that our personal injury team has been shortlisted for such a prestigious award for the second year running, which is indicative of the department’s dedication. The team has truly lived out Nelsons’ passion to empower our clients and give them a voice.”
