J Tomlinson apprentice passes new apprenticeship assessment with flying colours

A J Tomlinson employee who was one of the first students to undertake the new apprenticeship end-point assessment for the Customer Service Standard qualification has passed with flying colours.

Dee van Deventer, a Resident Liaison Officer (RLO) who was studying the Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner course, scored distinctions across the board on her end-point assessment following a 16-month study period.

The Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner Apprenticeship is a work-based distance learning course that supports individuals working in customer-facing roles.

As an RLO, Dee plays a critical role in maintaining excellent service delivery, acting as the main point of contact for residents who are due to have improvements made to their homes and assisting them throughout the process.

This can include helping to move furniture, getting involved with community events (e.g. fish and chip lunches, fun days, fundraising, coffee mornings), and even dog-walking!

This diverse role entails close liaison with J Tomlinson’s clients, site teams and contact centre to ensure the delivery of a first-class service including on-time delivery of works and minimal disruption throughout.

Key skills and qualities required for a RLO role with J Tomlinson include excellent communication, the ability to work well within a team, a commitment to delivering excellent results, problem solving and decision-making skills.

Dee, 34, was also announced winner of the Pride category in the annual CT Skills Made in the Midlands awards, which took place in Nottingham earlier this year, in recognition and celebration of the hard work and dedication of apprentices across Nottingham, Derby and Leicester. Pride is one of the six CT Skills core values, and Dee took home the accolade in recognition of her dedication to going above and beyond in her role, including her extensive work as a Dementia Awareness Champion.

Dee said: “I signed up to take the Customer Service Practitioner Apprenticeship because I believe education and a chance to develop new skills should always be grabbed with both hands.

“The course helped me to improve my existing skills through practice and webinars, and my CT Skills trainer was extremely helpful and supportive throughout. Apprenticeships are for everyone – not just those starting out in the world of work. I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone looking to develop their skillsets and gain more confidence.”

Diane Jones, head of people at J Tomlinson, added: “We are very proud of Dee and her recent achievements. J Tomlinson has a strong ‘grow our own’ culture that is focussed around empowering and supporting our employees in developing within in their chosen field. Last year, 32 J Tomlinson employees from across the business signed up for an apprenticeship, and we are pleased to work with CT Skills as one of our training and apprenticeship partners.”

“Since Dee’s success, we have had two more distinction grades achieved by fellow Resident Liaison Officers, Fiona Willis, 30, and Sue Foster, 56, who also carried out the Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner apprenticeship. Congratulations to Fiona and Sue, who have demonstrated that hard work and dedication pays off!”

CEO at CT Skills, Alex Ford commented: “Each year during the Made in the Midlands Awards it is with great honour that we hear not only about the progress and impact of apprentices like Dee but the workplace culture that they embody.

“As a training provider we design and develop all our provision specifically for those wanting to learn from experts in the field and are fortunate to attract some of the most knowledgeable assessors in the region.

“When our training culture is combined with a nurturing workplace environment, committed employees like Dee are empowered to make an unpredicted impact within a business. We look forward to following the journey of all J Tomlinson apprentices over the coming months and years!”

J Tomlinson provides a range of building solutions including construction, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance, engineering services, and facilities management. The Nottingham-based company, which works primarily across the East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire, has a number of apprenticeships throughout the business in a range of roles from administration to middle and senior management.
