Protection from evictions a step forward but more may be needed, say small firms

Responding to the MHCLG announcement of a three month extension to a moratorium on commercial tenant evictions in England, and the launch of a new code for landlords, Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) National Chairman Mike Cherry said:

“After months of little or no revenue coming in, delivery of the new moratorium that we’ve been calling for will come as a great relief to many small firms. A voluntary code was never going to be enough.

“Economic activity is not going to rebound overnight, so it’s critical that firms have some breathing space where tenancies are concerned. They did not cause this downturn.

“We look forward to working with MHCLG on what comes next as we look to emerge from this recession over the longer-term. There’s every chance that the three month moratorium announced today will need to be extended further.

“The code marks a starting point for longer-term conversations – we hope to see landlords not just signing it, but embracing the principles it seeks to promote and taking a generous approach to looking after their small business tenants."
