Wellbeing expert Kul Mahay to deliver online webinars to UK teaching staff as schools prepare to reopen their doors

A TOP wellbeing expert has joined forces with Derbyshire-based School Advisory Service and Fitter Future to offer guidance for school leaders affected by the changes to their work following the coronavirus pandemic.

Kul Mahay - who specialises in emotional intelligence and leadership and has worked with university lecturers and police chiefs - will hold the sessions, which are aimed at preparing Head Teachers and senior staff for the return of primary school children on June 1.

The UK Government unveiled its road map earlier this month and set out its aim to re-introduce those children currently in Reception, Year 1 and Year Six back into school, following an absence of almost three months.

Kul, along with Fitter Future, a company which provides both physical and mental education for schools and families in the UK, and the Derbyshire-based Schools Advisory Service – an insurance company serving more than 4,000 schools across the UK - will advise on teachers can build their mental resilience and leadership skills ahead of June 1.

The 53-year-old, who spent more than 32 years working for the police, said:

“Head Teachers are being challenged right now provide quality education in the midst of incredible uncertainty and it is an anxious time for many.

“Some members of staff have been stuck at home for over two months and they are now worried about going into a crowded environment. They’re worried about how the school will operate going forward and how best to look after both themselves and their pupils.

“No teacher or head teacher has been trained to deal with a situation like the COVID-19 outbreak; we are in unchartered territory and these are uncertain times.

“There are so many conflicting thoughts which they are having to deal with right now and my webinars – which are free – will help them to manage their leadership capability and build mental resilience.”

Kul is the founder of Ignite Your Inner Potential; a leadership programme which, using his 26 years’ experience in leadership, aims to coach and mentor others.  Last year, Kul launched Ignite Your Inner Potential Youth, aimed at inspiring the next generation of senior leaders.

He is an associate lecturer in leadership at the University of Derby.

The first webinar held on 18 May attracted 120 schools.  Almost 200 schools have signed up for the later webinars – and that number is increasing rapidly. The remaining session dates, which coincide with Mental Health Awareness week in the UK, are May 22, May 27 and May 29 (all at 4pm).
