Nottingham firms team up to boost women’s wellbeing during coronavirus lockdown

Amid a Government mandate that identifies daily exercise as an essential activity, two Nottingham-based companies have joined forces to empower women across the country by supporting them to boost their health and wellbeing in a new initiative.

At-home health testing provider Medichecks has partnered with Her Spirit, a personalised coaching app for your ‘mind, body and fuel’ to inspire women women everywhere to live a healthier, happier life.

Her Spirit offers a range of expert support and self help advice on how to look after your ‘mind, body and fuel’ by helping to change your eating habits, find activities you enjoy and connect you with other like-minded women.

Thanks to a partnership with Sport England every woman in the UK can now access the Her Spirit community and its ‘premium’ content for free until 30 June 2020, as a way to support women through a period of national uncertainty where a sense of community and motivation to be healthy are critically important. The app will provide free daily workouts, virtual group challenges, cooking sessions, meditations and weekly podcasts with contributions from BBC Breakfast presenter Louise Minchin and BBC triathlon presenter Annie Emmerson.

Pledging its support to Her Spirit, Medichecks has launched a new healthcare test, also called ‘Mind, Body and Fuel’ to help optimise energy, mood and long-term health.

The simple fingerprick blood test analyses a wide range of biomarkers that can affect wellbeing such as thyroid function, liver health and cholesterol. The test can highlight early risks of disease, empowering users to take action before more serious health complaints occur.  It can be done at home and posted back to Medichecks, in line with the Government’s current ‘stay home, stay safe’ advice, with results and doctor analysis available online within days.

Her Spirit co-founders, Mel Berry and Holly Woodford, established their female virtual community to tackle a ‘vicious circle’ of the diet and wellbeing industry, which they say is failing women and reinforcing unhealthy behaviours.

Holly explained: “We want to support women to build their confidence, whether through small or large steps, to a healthier and happier future – and with the current pandemic taking its toll on our day to day routines, using exercise as an outlet has never been more important.

“We might be socially isolated, but we are determined to keep women across the UK healthy and happy. As the world turns on its axis, there is a need to provide women with consistent daily support and the motivation to keep clocking up at least 30 active minutes per day through live streamed sessions and demonstrations.

“Our mission is to tackle a crisis among women with which sees 40% not active enough to realise the health benefits. The online Her Spirit community champions companionship to help achieve personal objectives – our motto is ‘Together We’ve Got This’.”

The ultimate aim is to #MakeEveryMinuteCount – encouraging the Her Spirit community to do at least 30 minutes of activity each day, logging every active minute. For every 500 minutes accumulated by the end of June, Her Spirit will gift one premium annual subscription (normally £49.99) to women who are unable to afford to access health and well-being support services.

The partnership is a first-of-its-kind for Medichecks, which was set up by entrepreneur Helen Marsden more than 17 years ago when she spotted a gap in the market for a service providing affordable, convenient blood tests to give personal insights into health.

Under Helen’s leadership, the company has grown from an online catalogue of laboratory tests to become the UK’s leading direct-to-consumer health check service, with the most comprehensive blood test offering. More than 4.9 million online tests results are now delivered by Medichecks each year, from nutrition and hormones to cholesterol and diabetes tests.

Helen said: “Medichecks is all about people seizing the opportunity to take charge of their own health and wellbeing by understanding their bodies better. The message that it’s what’s on the inside that counts represented a strong synergy with our brand values, so teaming up with Her Spirit was a natural step for us to take.”
