New East Midlands’ course to prepare solicitors for Higher Courts

New East Midlands’ course to prepare solicitors for Higher Courts

Nottingham Law School (NLS) is to deliver a new Higher Rights of Audience (HRA) Summer School course for solicitors who wish conduct advocacy for clients in the Higher Courts.

The dedicated Summer School will provide an opportunity to enhance and develop practical skills both as a litigator and as an advocate.

The programme prepares solicitors for the Higher Rights of Audience Assessment. It includes one-day exploring evidence, ethics and procedure, and three-days of Advocacy training at NLS, an SRA accredited provider and the home of the UK’s first Centre for Advocacy.

A key feature of the course is its flexibility and approach to student support both before and after teaching days. Participants will prepare at their own pace, using a variety of learning materials, such as directed reading accompanied by short form exercises, multiple choice questions, film clips, and short “how to” talks from experienced practising lawyers via an online learning portal.

Enrolment on the course comes with access to all NTU library facilities, the use of state-of-the-art courtroom facilities during the advocacy training, and one-to-one feedback.

The course, which has been designed by Course Director Jane Jarman, ensures that participants have the space and time to develop skills alongside their workplace commitments over a period of three months from enrolment to assessment.

Professor Paula Moffatt, Director of External Engagement at NLS, said:

“At Nottingham Law School we pride ourselves on excellence in legal education. The expertise within the School and our extensive links with regulators and the professions have provided a platform for us to deliver tailored, practical programmes and to respond to a continually evolving legal setting.

“We strive to meet the needs of local, national and international law firms through innovative professional legal education and training, and we have been working closely with our industry partners to fill an important training gap which exists in the region.”

Enrolment for the NLS Higher Rights of Audience Summer School will take place on 1 June 2020. Further course and assessment dates can be found on the NLS website at www.ntu.ac.uk/hra
