Derby organise to champion STEM education in E. Mids schools

The Derby Teaching Schools Alliance has been chosen to help drive greater interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Education & Mathematics) subjects in secondary schools across the East Midlands.

The Derby based charitable organisation, chosen due to its strong links with schools across the region, forms part of a new 22-strong network of STEM Club Champions created by education and careers provider, STEM Learning following funding from Gatsby Foundation.

STEM Clubs often run out-of-timetable and offer an outlet to ignite new, or further students' interest in STEM subjects through more imaginative and inventive teaching methods, unconfined by the structures of the curriculum.

Representatives from Derby Teaching Schools Alliance will work with secondary schools, as well as Sixth Form and FE Colleges, throughout the East Midlands, to deliver a programme of workshops and networking events for teaching professionals. A central element will be encouraging schools to enhance pupils knowledge of the exciting range of STEM related careers available (locally and nationally) by tapping into STEM Learning's 30,000 strong ambassador networks, which represents 2500 different employers.
