Cheque presentation marks launch of Wathall’s Wish Campaign

Family-owned funeral directors, Wathall’s, have launched a new community support pledge with the presentation a giant cheque to Derby charity Safe and Sound.

Wathall’s Wish will support a different charity every month over the coming year either with money, volunteering or donations of goods and services.  The common theme is that all these charities provide support for people at difficult times in their lives.

The first recipient of a Wathall’s Wish has been Safe and Sound which supports children and young people across the county who are, or are at risk of becoming, victims of exploitation, including child sexual exploitation.

Wathall’s collected a record £1,337 in donations from those who attended their annual Service of Remembrance and Hope at Derby Cathedral in the run up to Christmas to remember loved ones who have passed away.

With gift aid, the among the charity has received is around £1,500 and Wathall’s are also supporting Safe and Sound’s race night fundraiser on February 7 with a further pledge to provide volunteer support in the coming months.

Helen Wathall MBE, who is Managing Director and the fifth generation of her family to head the company, added:

“There is a link to Safe and Sound and the work we do through Dandelions Bereavement Support as bereavement is often a trigger for young people to feel isolated and become vulnerable to grooming – particularly through online social media channels.

“We were therefore keen to contribute to the Safe and Sound Butterfly Appeal to enable this local charity to expand the scope of their work and support even more young people.

“We look forward to working with many more charities over the coming year across Derby, Ashbourne and Burton where we are based and to making a positive contribution to the safety and well-being of many more local people.”

Safe and Sound chief executive Tracy Harrison added:

“Wathall’s support will help us to move forward with our plans to support even more young people, their families and the wider local communities.

“We want to expand our grassroots work to support individuals at risk of grooming and exploitation, their families and to raise public awareness of the very real dangers facing all girls and boys in our county both online and in our local communities.”
