EE launches 5G in Leicester

EE has announced it has switched on 5G in Leicester, as customers in the area can now receive the latest mobile network technology.

  • EE continues 5G rollout, with coverage arriving in Leicester
  • City is among the first in the country to receive the mobile network technology
  • Independent testing from RootMetrics confirms EE has the broadest 5G network, with the highest 5G availability in London, Birmingham and Cardiff
  • 5G will offer increased speeds, reliability and connectivity

The city is among the first towns and cities across the UK to receive EE’s 5G network, as independent tests from RootMetrics reveal it has the best performing 5G network, with the most coverage, in London, Birmingham and Cardiff.

EE was the first to launch 5G in the UK when six cities were switched on in May. Since then it has been building its network on a daily basis.

The arrival of 5G in Leicester means people in the city are among the first in the country to benefit from the technology, which is set to revolutionise the way we live and work

Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s consumer division, said:

“Switching on 5G in more places is helping us deliver the best mobile experience to our customers, keeping them connected to the things that matter most.

“RootMetrics’ early 5G testing shows that we are a long way ahead in terms of 5G performance, and our engineers are continuing to build new sites every day, on our journey to keeping our customers connected 100% of the time.”

Wendy Sycamore, BT Group regional lead for the Midlands, said:

“It’s great to see Leicester amongst the first locations in the UK to welcome 5G. The new technology will enable a faster, more reliable mobile connection for both consumers and businesses in the area and is set to play a pivotal role in our lives.”

Scott Knowles, Chief Executive at East Midlands Chamber, said:

“The arrival of 5G in Leicester is welcome news.

“Connectivity is absolutely essential to business and 5G coverage will undoubtedly enable the great businesses we have across Leicester to engage even more effectively with their partners and consumers, while also enhancing international trade-based communications.”

According to the latest 5G testing by RootMetrics, EE’s 5G network achieved the highest average download speed and 5G availability in London, Birmingham and Cardiff*. RootMetrics’ availability’ measure shows how often devices connected to 5G during download testing across each city.

5G is built on top of EE’s award winning 4G network – customers will connect to both 4G and 5G at the same time to get the best possible experience, even in the most crowded areas.

EE has 5G in more places in the UK than other network, and is targeting 5G connectivity in 45 cities and large towns by the end of the year.
