Leicester College student is finalist in National Asian Apprenticeship Awards

Janie Lam, a student at Leicester College, has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Health, Medical and Social Care category of the national Asian Apprenticeship Awards 2019.

During her Business Administration Apprenticeship Scheme at Leicester College, Janie is working as an Administrative Assistant in the Operations Management Team at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

Now in its fourth year, the Asian Apprenticeship Awards celebrates the talent and diversity of British Asian apprentices, their employers and learning providers. The winners of the awards will be announced at an awards event in Birmingham on 31 October 2019.

Commenting on the awards, Janie Lam said:

“Coming from a non-NHS background, the Business Administration Apprenticeship Scheme allowed me to gain valuable skills and improve my confidence whilst gaining valuable work experience. It has allowed me to use the skills that I have and apply them to perform my role with more confidence.

“I am thrilled at being shortlisted for the award. For me the decision to be an apprentice was very personal and it was not something I really imagined would make me worthy of an award. I would like to thank colleagues at UHL and the tutors at Leicester College for all of their support and guidance.”

Bhups Narsey, Lead Trainer Assessor for Business and Computing at Leicester College said:

"Every time I have met Janie, she has been working as a conscientious student in class. From feedback from her assessor, she proved that she was taking what she had learnt in the classroom back into her work practice, which is exactly what we want from each apprentice.”

Joanne Bee, Partnerships and Business Development Manager at University Hospitals of Leicester added:

"Janie was a valued member of the team. She was very conscientious, and her willingness to get things right was to be commended.  She developed new skills as part of her apprenticeship and progressed into a new exciting administration role working for the operations team."
