Lincoln medical school provides healthy boost to student housing

The opening of the new Lincoln Medical School at the University of Lincoln has helped a specialist lettings agent and property management company record its busiest ever start to the academic year.

Student Housing, which has been helping undergraduates find high-quality accommodation since 2015, has this year seen an 82% increase in the number of students moving into its properties.

In 2018, directors Harry Conti (26) and Marcus Askam-Yates (28) and their team, worked with 671 students. This year, 1,223 have found accommodation through Student Housing.

Student Housing has been able to accommodate the increased number of tenants as it has enjoyed a 62% year on year increase in its property portfolio.

"We are working with more landlords than last year, which is fantastic as we've had a record number of students approach us looking for a home from home," says Harry. "I think our unique approach has helped us enormously. We only work with landlords whose properties are in top condition, well decorated and equipped with the amenities that students demand, such as superfast broadband. Our bills-inclusive approach also makes it incredibly easy for students to manage their finances as they know exactly how much their accommodation is going to cost them.

"We've also worked incredibly hard to ensure our team is large enough to cope with the increased number of students coming to us. We have a fantastic retention rate, with over 90% of our tenants staying with us when their tenancy agreement comes to an end.

"Our branding, the perks we provide, such as our famous Halloween party and competitions to win free pizzas, and plain talking and transparent pricing really appeals to students. And, because we have so many students coming to us for help, we attract the best landlords, which is helping us to grow as a business.

"The Lincoln Medical School is a fantastic addition to the University and we’re confident it will have a positive effect on our business.”

Harry and Marcus were inspired to start Student Housing when they were struggling to find accommodation themselves.

"We dropped out of university as we knew there was an opportunity to start a business that could make a real difference to students and landlords. Five years on and we're busier than ever before and have attracted a record number of students. There's no doubt that the growth of the University of Lincoln and development such as the new medical school have helped us."

The company's turnover has quadrupled since opening for business, and last year Student Housing acquired properties worth over £3m for investors looking to capitalise on Lincoln's buoyant student housing market.
