Robin Hood Half Marathon Runner Raises £600 for Alzheimer’s Society

Bridget Knowles, Commercial Account Handler for local insurance broker, Russell Scanlan, has raised over £600 for the Alzheimer’s Society by taking part in this year’s Robin Hood Half Marathon.

Having ran many 5k and 10k races before, this was Bridget’s first attempt at taking on the distance and after months of training, she successfully completed the half marathon in 2 hours 32 minutes.

Bridget said:

“The atmosphere on the day was amazing. Lots of friends, family and colleagues were there to cheer me on and my partner ran with me for moral support.  It was the perfect temperature for running and the weather conditions held out nicely for the race. When I got to Wollaton Park, I was lucky enough to bump into Vicky McClure, who also happens to be an ambassador for Alzheimer’s Society. She was full of words of encouragement and gave me a high five! I finished the race two minutes after my goal time but I’m very happy regardless.”

Nottingham-based independent insurance broker, Russell Scanlan, announced Alzheimer’s Society, the UK’s leading dementia support and research organisation, as its Charity of the Year for 2019. Throughout the year, they have carried out a variety of events and also launched a new Charity Committee made up of team members with a passion for charity work who spearhead fundraising initiatives, including an annual leave raffle, tuck shops and a Great British Bake Off-style baking challenge.

Bridget added:

“Alzheimer’s Society is a great charity that raises awareness for an issue very close to my heart. Last year, we sadly lost my Aunt and partner’s Mother, to the disease. When Russell Scanlan announced Alzheimer’s Society as their Charity of The Year, I was even more determined to get involved in raising money. I have been overwhelmed with the donations so far and feel very proud to have ran the half marathon.”

Mike Dickinson, Sales and Marketing Director at Russell Scanlan, said:

“Raising money for good causes is something we care very much about at Russell Scanlan. The Alzheimer’s Society provides a vital service for people affected by dementia in Nottinghamshire and the surrounding area, as well as across the UK as a whole. We’re extremely proud of Bridget, this is a huge personal achievement for her which has also raised a fantastic amount of money for our chosen charity.”

Alzheimer’s Society was founded in 1979 and is the only UK charity that campaigns for better dementia awareness, funds potentially life-saving research and supports those affected by the disease. It is estimated that someone develops dementia approximately every three minutes in the UK, yet a cure is still to be found.
