Coffee ousts builders' tea as the favourite drink for builders ahead of MacMillan

In preparation for the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning this week, staff at leading Leicestershire homebuilder, David Wilson Homes East Midlands are revealing their hot drink preferences and giving advice on how to make the best cuppa.

In order to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, the kettle will be on at three of the company’s developments in Leicestershire this Friday 27th September between 10am and 5.30pm and the onsite staff will be offering visitors a hot drink and a slice of cake in exchange for a donation.

A new survey of David Wilson Homes Site Managers confirmed that a good brew is an important part of the day with three cups a day being the most popular choice, with a whopping 52% opting for tea without sugar.

However, coffee is now the preferred beverage of builders, with 54% of staff who took part in the survey choosing it to start the day. Only 5% of respondents opted for a hot chocolate as their cuppa of choice.

They also revealed their top advice for making the best brew in time for the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, which is when making tea to add the hot water first (70%) and then leave the tea bag in for between 30 seconds and a minute.

Other tips include always using fresh water, stirring in both directions, squeezing the tea bag and sipping gently – with some even saying the secret to making a good brew is to do it with love and patience!

When it comes to what biscuit to have with the tea or coffee, the traditional choice of Chocolate Hobnob was the runaway favourite with 33% of respondents making it top of their list.

Surprisingly, a few controversial decisions were made with Party Rings, Oreos and Chocolate Fingers being omitted from the choices of Site Managers.

John Reddington, Managing Director for David Wilson Homes East Midlands, said,

“Our hard-working staff want to do something a little different on their tea break on Friday and holding a communal coffee morning is a great way to show our support for the valuable work being done by Macmillan Cancer Support.

"We want to help Macmillan raise as much money as they can to support those who are affected by cancer, and we encourage everyone to join in and do the same so that together we can make the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning even bigger and better than ever.”

The developments taking part include Fleckney Fields in Fleckney, Wigston Meadows in Wigston and David Wilson Homes at Kibworth.

Chloe Coombs, New Business Manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, said:

“There are now 2.5 million people in the UK living with cancer. By 2040, this will rise to 5.3 million people. Macmillan Cancer Support wants to be there for everyone at the time of diagnosis but right now, we just can’t reach everyone who needs our support.

"We are delighted that David Wilson Homes are taking part again this year. Their support means so much to us, and allows Macmillan to continue funding services in every community across the UK. A huge thank you to everyone taking part, every penny raised makes a difference.

"Coming along to a Macmillan Coffee Morning is the perfect chance to catch up over a cuppa, enjoy some delicious treats and help Macmillan be right there to help people with cancer to live their lives as fully as they can by providing physical, financial and emotional support for those who need them.”
