Banner Jones’ Executive Director appointed as President of The Notaries Society of England and Wales

Executive Director at Banner Jones Solicitors, Stephen Gordon, has recently been appointed as President of The Notaries Society, the representative society for the 775 Notaries practising in England and Wales.

Founded in 1882, The Notaries Society plays a major part in the lives of Notaries offering training, continuing professional development as well as international representation. Notaries represent the oldest and smallest branch of the legal profession in England and Wales and so the work of the Society is crucial in ensuring their interests are best represented.

Stephen, who heads up the Business Legal Services team at Banner Jones Solicitors, has been a qualified Notary Public dealing with international matters for both private and commercial clients for over 25 years, and is now the only remaining Notary Public in Chesterfield.

Having been appointed as Vice President in 2017, Stephen was elected to the Presidents role on 19th September 2019.  Stephen will run the society and continue its work on the development of professional standards.

Commenting on his appointment Stephen said:

“I’m extremely proud to have been appointed as President of the Society and am delighted to further my involvement in supporting the work of fellow Notary Publics across England and Wales.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome on board our newly qualified Notary, Matthew Maiden. Matthew who heads up the commercial team in our Mansfield office has recently been awarded the Notary qualification by the Archbishop of Canterbury.”

Matthew will now be able to be involved in cases that will require documents and certifications to be sent overseas, a service a regular solicitor is unable to provide.

In particular, this will assist him in his specialisms in Residential and Commercial Conveyancing, Commercial Property Leases, Licensing, Business Acquisitions and Disposal.

Matthew qualified for the award after he completed a rigorous academic and professional training scheme in which he completed a 2-year Notarial Practice Course delivered by University College London and an Office Practice Course.

Commenting on his appointment Matthew said:

“I’m extremely proud to have been recognised as a Notary and to become a member of The Notaries Society which will give me access to a great network of layers across England and Wales.

“This will allow me to build on the fantastic work Stephen has been doing for Banner Jones as a notary and help expand our offering to our clients in Nottinghamshire.

“During the training programme my course colleagues were very impressed that I was being supervised by Stephen Gordon the President of the Notaries Society.

“I am grateful for the ongoing respect and support I have received from my team and wider colleagues at Banner Jones as part of this process.”
