Wathall’s Launch Workplace Bereavement Support

Wathall’s, Derby’s longest established independent funeral directors, have launched a bespoke support programme to enable businesses and organisations to better help colleagues come to terms with bereavement.

The company, which has branches in Derby, Alvaston, Ashbourne, Burton and Borrowash, currently offers the four-week support and education programme for members of the public at various times throughout the year.

Feedback from business owners has prompted Wathall’s to now offer Dandelions Bereavement Support either in the workplace or an external venue nearby.

Managing director Helen Wathall is the fifth generation of her family to run the company which has been established in Derby since 1858.

Wathall’s has won several awards for its contribution to local communities – including  bereavement support - and Miss Wathall was awarded in MBE in the New Year’s Honours list last year for her work to support local business communities.

She explained:

“Dandelions Bereavement Support has run very successfully for the general public for several years.

“During that time I have been approached by companies and organisations of all sizes suggesting that this programme would be an excellent way for them to better support their staff.

“The programme is designed for small groups of people who are at various stages in their bereavement process.  Some have lost a loved one recently and others have been struggling with bereavement for some time but are now ready for support.

“It is not formal counselling but the opportunity to be part of a group that explores the grief process and emotional pathway and helps people come to terms with adjustments to life as it is now and the ‘new normal’.

“Our aim of bringing this into the workplace is to break down the taboos of talking about death and encourage everyone to be more open about their feelings.

“This will help employers recognise the support they need to put into place for individuals and better help them to return to being happy and productive in the workplace.”
