Inspiring Business by Sharing Success

Three generations of one Derbyshire family celebrate awards success

Three generations of a Derbyshire family are celebrating after they were named as finalists in this year’s Midlands Family Business of the Year Awards.

Lobina Transport, based in Ilkeston, is up for Employer of the Year in the awards scheme, which received a record number of entries in its 10th anniversary year.

Managing director Luigi Lobina said:

“This is the first time we’ve entered and we’re delighted to be recognised as a finalist in this prestigious category. My grandfather Gino started up in business in the 1960s. His natural instinct was to be helpful, honest and treat others as he would want to be treated. That has set the tone for the company culture we have built. All our employees are family to us.

“My father Simon took up the reins from his father and expanded the company and now I’m proud to be the third generation at the helm of the business.

“There is a real ‘family feel’ in the office, meaning that we lift each other through difficult days and we celebrate every victory and give credit where it’s due.”

Lobina Transport, a freight-forwarding company that moves all types of cargo between locations in the UK and Europe, recently became a major sponsor of the Derbyshire Institute of Sport (DIS).

Luigi explained:

“We recognised in DIS the same culture and qualities that matter to us – integrity, passion, and a desire to be the best.”

DIS identifies talented, young athletes with a dream of being world champion and puts world-class support and mentoring in place for them to help them achieve their Olympic and Paralympic dreams.

Lobina Transport has a packed plan of joint initiatives lined up for the coming 12 months that will include a fun, static bike challenge for employees in September, with encouragement from Derby’s cycling champion Dan Bigham of DIS and the Huub Wattbike Test Team.

The next stage of the awards will see judges interviewing key personnel from Lobina Transport in October. The awards will be presented at a black tie dinner in Leicester in November.

The Midlands Family Business of the Year awards are the UK’s only independent initiative dedicated to celebrating and recognising the success, achievements and innovations of family run and owned businesses.
