Customer’s life saved by quick-thinking shopping centre team!

Staff at Idlewells Shopping Centre have been labelled heroes after the team recently came to the aid of stricken customer Malcolm Burrows, who suffered a heart attack while out shopping.

Malcolm suddenly took ill whilst in the Sutton-in-Ashfield shopping centre in June of this year. After falling to the floor and cutting his head, staff were quickly alerted to his distress and tended to him immediately.

The two Idlewells security guards soon realised that Malcolm’s pulse had disappeared, with medical staff later saying that for a brief time he was ‘clinically dead’ and that the quick thinking of the centre’s staff was the difference between life and death - as Centre Manager Chloe O’Donnell goes on to explain.

“Our staff heard a loud bang and when they turned around, they saw that Malcolm had collapsed to the floor, ” says Chloe.

“He hit his head and cut it as he fell - so our team began attending to the cut first. They rang for an ambulance but Malcolm soon started to lose consciousness, so they called for our security team, Jason Ingram and Neil Thompson, who administered CPR whilst the ambulance crew made its way to the scene. At this point no one knew for definite what was causing Malcolm to lose consciousness or how serious this situation was - so it was quick, instinctive thinking from our guys to follow the right procedures and ultimately save Malcolm’s life!”

The emergency services rushed Malcolm to Mansfield’s Kings Mill Hospital to receive further medical treatment - including surgery to have a heart stent fitted after realising that he had in fact suffered a heart attack. He then spent several weeks recovering in hospital before being discharged.

Malcolm recently went back to Kings Mill for a check-up, with staff saying that his heart stent is working well and he is on the road to recovery.

Malcolm has nothing but praise for Idlewells’ staff and the medical professionals that came to his aid - and realises that without their support, things could have turned out very differently.

“I would like to say a big thank you to the two security guards who helped me because without them, I probably wouldn’t be here today,” says Malcolm.

“Their quick thinking and ability to know what to do at every stage is commendable and for them to keep me going while the ambulance crews were en-route has meant that this story has had a happy ending,”

He continues, “The paramedics that came to the scene, the A&E staff that looked after me and the surgeon that performed my heart operation were fantastic and I cannot praise the team at Kings Mill Hospital enough. They’ve been great with me not only at the time of the incident, but also during my recovery,”

“I feel like I am making great progress and I will certainly thank the Idlewells team again the next time I’m out shopping!”
