Plumtree Nursery Raises £1,435.58 for Cancer Charity

Summer Fair held to celebrate the 30th birthday of Children 1st Day Nurseries with all proceeds donated to ‘Harry’s Giant Pledge’ as part of company’s pledge to support 30 good causes throughout its anniversary year.

Children, staff and parents at Children 1st @ Plumtree are pleased to have raised £1,435.58 for Harry’s Giant Pledge, a fundraising initiative set up to raise funds for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity which fundraises for The Royal Marsden Hospital, a world-leading cancer centre, at its recent Summer Fair.

The charity was chosen in recognition of the fact that most families will at some time experience the impact that cancer has on the lives of their loved ones. This has been brought home to Children 1st recently when the young great nephew of one of the directors, Harry aged just five, lost his life as a result of Ewings Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer.

Through ‘Harry’s Giant Pledge’ his family are attempting to raise £350,000 to support the Royal Marsden which aims to provide the best possible treatment and care through research and investment in state of the art equipment and facilities.

In addition to supporting the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, the Summer Fair was organised to celebrate Children 1st Day Nurseries’ 30th anniversary. With the best interests of children and their families at the heart of its ethos, the company, which has five nurseries in Nottinghamshire decided to mark this significant milestone with a year-long programme of activity to raise funds for a range of children’s clubs, charities, groups and local initiatives.

Children 1st @ Plumtree decided that Harry’s Giant Pledge in support of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity would benefit from the proceeds of the Summer Fair, along with contributions from the directors and staff at the company’s head office in Long Eaton.

The event raised £717.79 on the day and this has been match funded by the company to bring the overall total to £1,435.58.

Children 1st Day Nurseries plans further fundraising activity throughout its 30th anniversary year across its 24 settings within the Midlands and South Yorkshire and more fund-raising for ‘Harry’s Giant Pledge’ will take place on 14 September with a sponsored walk through the Chatsworth Estate in Derbyshire. Since Children 1st Day Nurseries was formed in 1988 by Margaret Mason OBE and her family, it has grown to be one of the UK’s leading family owned childcare providers, with 83% of its settings rated as ‘Outstanding in All Areas’ by Ofsted. The company now cares for 2,356 children and employs over 600 people.
