East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre is recruiting cardiac nurses in preparation for move to new facilities at Leicester Royal Infirmary

- Recruitment Event at Glenfield Hospital, 4th September 2019, 5pm to 8pm -

East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre (EMCHC), part of University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and currently based at Glenfield Hospital, is hosting a recruitment event on 4th September 2019 to attract cardiac nurses ahead of its re-location to new facilities at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

EMCHC cares for patients with congenital heart disease and the centre is internationally recognised for its Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) unit, 24/7 retrieval service and highly experienced cardiac team.

EMCHC is preparing to relocate its paediatric congenital heart services from Glenfield Hospital to a brand new £10 million children’s unit at Leicester Royal Infirmary in December 2020. The new facilities will include a state of the art cardiac theatre, cardiac catheter laboratory, paediatric intensive care unit, cardiac ward and out-patients department.

A variety of new roles are now available for both newly qualified nurses and experienced nurses, including Band 5 Registered Children’s Nurses for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and Cardiac Ward, Band 5 Registered Nurses and Operating Department Practitioners for our Paediatric Cardiac Theatres and Cardiac Catheter Laboratory.

There are also exciting opportunities for experienced Band 6 and Band 7 nurses to join the Paediatric & Adult ECMO Service, who look after the sickest patients receiving Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) treatment. Glenfield Hospital is one of the world’s busiest ECMO centres and the only hospital in the UK to provide ECMO therapy for both adults and children.

Due to the expanding Paediatric Critical Care Retrieval Team, COMET they also need experienced Paediatric Intensive Care Nurses to join a busy retrieval service that is looking to recruit existing Band 6 Nurses or nurses that are looking for that next development opportunity

Jo Ennis joined the children’s hospital in 2016 and is Matron for the Paediatric Intensive Care Units at both Glenfield Hospital and Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Jo says,

Heart defects are among the most common birth defects and are the leading cause of birth defect-related deaths. Around one person in 9,000 are born with a congenital heart defect. The team at EMCHC has some of the leading experts in the field in the world and we have some amazing opportunities for nurses to join us who want to progress their careers at one of the UK’s leading congenital heart centres for children.

“One of the benefits of working at EMCHC is the fantastic career progression opportunities. All areas have bespoke training packages and we have our own education team. Staff are really supported to develop their careers and have access to a variety of pathways, as well as university courses to prepare them for more advanced roles. “The service is undergoing a complete transformation and will be moving to the Kensington Building at the Leicester Royal Infirmary next year. We will have a new cardiac ward, an outpatient department, cardiac catheter lab, paediatric intensive care unit, cardiac theatre, and new parent’s accommodation. The facilities will be age appropriate to meet the needs of all of our children and young people. There is also a long-term plan to create a whole new Children’s Hospital in the Kensington Building, creating standalone facilities at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, adjacent to the new Children’s Emergency Department.

“We are preparing our workforce for this move, so we can provide training for the many specialist areas we have at the centre. Our focus is continuing to deliver the amazing services, rated as “Outstanding” by the CQC, we have always provided and develop those services going into the future, eventually bringing our two PICU’s together as one team on one site over the coming years.
