Inspiring Business by Sharing Success

Leading Leicester businesses donate blood in support of #BleedForHayley

At age 35, Leukaemia Warrior Hayley Perks was diagnosed with leukaemia in March 2018.

As a headstrong character and previous police officer, Hayley refused to let her cancer diagnosis define her. Instead, she injected her time into mentoring other cancer patients, raising money for charities including Blood Wise and Hope Against Cancer and also increasing awareness in the importance of blood donation.

Throughout treatment, Hayley received 67 blood and platelet transfusions which was a combination of 536 people’s blood donations. But Hayley story isn’t one of its kind - 15,000 lives are lost each year to various types of blood cancer, with the NHS needing 400 new donors a day to meet demand.

Before Hayley tragically lost her battle earlier this year, she set a mission alongside family friend Eileen Richards MBE to increase the amount of blood donations within Leicestershire. With Eileen holding strong business links across the region, the plan was set to encourage more business professionals to take time out of their diary to give blood.

In Hayley’s legacy, the #BleedForHayley campaign was born. The Eileen Richards Recruitment team targeted local businesses to encourage them to support the campaign by booking an appointment during the last week of July.

The aim was to encourage 50 professionals to get on board, resulting in the potential to save 150 lives. However, it exceeded the expectations of the recruitment firm with just fewer than 100 new and regular donors giving blood between 29th July – 3rd August. Businesses involved ranged from large corporate including the East Midlands Chamber, Gateley’s Legal, Berkeley Insurance, Next and Hastings Direct to SME’s such as Emery Johnson Astills, Plug Bathrooms, Mocha Marketing and Soar Valley Press. Other businesses involved were Mattioli Woods, Cross Productions, Kazzoo IT, Micro-Fresh, DHL, Charity Link, Midnight Baker and Sarah Higgins Corporate Coaching.

MD Eileen Richards stated

“We are overwhelmed with the amount of support our #BleedForHayley campaign has received. So much so, that we will be repeating it again at the end of the year over a longer period so there is additional slots for even more people to get involved. Hayley was a beacon of light and would be truly delighted by the positive impact and success of the campaign so far”.

Hayley’s father added

“Prior to Hayley's diagnosis giving blood was always on my list, but not at the top, PLEASE put it at the top of yours. My last donation was completely painless and took less than 8 minutes. That's the time it takes to help save a life.

The #BleedForHayley campaign is set to run throughout an entire year. Within this period, Hayley’s family and the Eileen Richards Recruitment team have set a target to have had 500 donations as part of the campaign.
