Children’s art proves a winner during festival

Art by more than sixty secondary school pupils from in and around Rugby has been on show as part of Rugby Festival of Culture in an exhibition sponsored by Hinckley & Rugby Building Society.

Colin Fyfe, the Society’s chief executive, helped select three prizewinning pieces from the Aiming High exhibition at Floor One in Rugby Art Gallery and Museum.

The winners were: in first place, Red Shoes, by Tegan Chaffer, an A level student from Ashlawn School; second prize went to My Last Hoorah, by Charlie Steadman, a year 9 pupil at Rugby Free School; and in third place was The Dreamer, by Amy Chase, a GCSE pupil at Rugby High School.

Colin said:

“The whole exhibition was really enjoyable both to visit and to judge. Tegan’s winning still life of a pair of red shoes is amazing. Everyone who saw it was reflecting differently on what those shoes meant to them.

“All the art was very different and all provoked real interest from the visitors. The talent on show was excellent and really stimulated the viewer.

“We’re going to put the top three works on display in our Rugby branch at North Street, so they can be seen by a wider audience. We had the work of local artist Janet Watson on display as part of the Festival of Culture’s Art Trail and I know she valued that showcase.”

Joanne Bailey, arts development officer at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum, said:

“The standard of work in this year’s exhibition was very impressive. It is wonderful to see so many talented Rugby students getting involved.”
