Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust Summer Recruitment Drive for Community Nurses

Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT) is on a summer recruitment drive to boost its team of community nurses in Leicestershire.

LPT provides a range of community health services for patients with physical and mental health conditions and its specialist services include physical health community and inpatient services, family and young people services, mental health and learning disabilities services.

The Trust is now recruiting a Band 5 Community Staff Nurse to join the community nursing services  based at Loughborough Hospital serving the Charnwood area; Band 5 Community Staff Nurses to join the service based in either Market Harborough or Leicester working with patients in the Market Harborough, Kibworth, Oadby and Wigston areas; and two Band 5 Community Staff Nurses for roles in Ashby and Coalville.

Other areas are also recruiting Community Staff Nurses; including Leicester City where LPT is offering ‘retention payments’ for its Band 5 posts in City Community Services, which are £2,000 in bonus payments for staff who stay in the role for three years.

All roles are available on a full-time and part-time basis and qualified and newly qualified staff are welcome to apply. The roles are ideal for nurses who want to broaden their range of skills and knowledge in caring for people in their own environment, while working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Daniel Norbury, Head of Employment Services at Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust said,

“There are many benefits of working at LPT including our first-rate training and development programmes, plus the structured nursing career pathways that help staff progress their careers, whatever stage they are at.

“This is an exciting time to join our team as the community service is currently undergoing a programme of change. IT systems, record keeping processes, staff skill mix, roles and responsibilities are being remodelled to ensure that patients receive care from the right staff member with the right skills at the right time in the right place.

“Community nurses play a vital role looking after patients in a variety of community settings.  Nurses who join the community team will discover the tremendous opportunities for career development and progression and we encourage nurses looking for a challenging but rewarding career move to apply.”

Samantha Hayman is a community nurse based in Leicester City. She really enjoys her job, especially the different patients she works with.

Samantha explains,

“We’re working with an ageing population, so the majority of our patients are elderly and can’t get to a clinic. I have a variety of patients from those that are self-caring and just need extra support with things like administering insulin to palliative patients with complex needs, and patients undergoing long term treatments such as chemotherapy.

“The reason I joined the community nursing team is I love doing holistic assessments. When I first meet a patient, I’ll be thinking about their environment, if they need equipment, the reasons why they have been referred and I will use my knowledge to work out how I’m going to treat them. If I need to, I can speak with a complex care nurse or another specialist to get advice too.

“I feel I can make such as difference to patients as I’m using my knowledge and applying it to that patient who is always really thankful. I build up close relationships with them and their families with I love. I can go home thinking I’ve actually made a difference.”

Samantha is keen to dispel the myth community nursing is only for older nurses and highly recommends the role for younger nurses. She says,

“When I was student, I was told community nursing was for older nurses who want to settle down. It’s not like that and I’ve found I’ve learnt so much in the past years. I’ve learnt so many new skills, plus if I want to do an extra course I can.”

“My colleagues are amazing and the management is really supportive. They are always pushing me to continue developing professionally and want me to progress.  I love spending time with the patients and I love getting up and going to work every day. I can’t say that about any other job I’ve had. I definitely recommend community nursing to anyone, 100%.”
