BBC micro:bit Extends Global Reach

New distribution deal with Premier Farnell will see Kitronik’s entire BBC micro:bit product range distributed globally.

Since its launch in 2016 the BBC micro:bit has grown in popularity and has sparked the interest of millions of future electronics engineers across the globe.

Resulting from this rise in popularity, Kitronik, one of the original partner organisations involved in the BBC’s Make it Digital Campaign which launched the micro:bit in 2016, has announced the signing of a global distribution agreement with leading electronics distributor Premier Farnell.

The new agreement means that Kitronik’s entire micro:bit product range, along with the micro:bit, is now available globally through Premier Farnell.

Kitronik will also have a ‘Learning Portal’ on Premier Farnell’s website. This will feature content from Kitronik, such as its learning resources and videos, which will support teachers, students and makers in realising the full potential of the micro:bit project kits.

The Nottingham based electronics company, which specialises in creating innovative project kits and learning resources for schools and the maker community, has been at the forefront of developing these resources for the past three years to ensure that the potential of the micro:bit to raise access to electronics in a fun and meaningful way is realised. Their success means that Kitronik’s products are popular with education providers and makers in Europe, the Middle East and North America, where they are used to support the teaching of electronics.

Since the launch of the micro:bit in 2016, Kitronik has partnered with the BBC and micro:bit educational foundation to develop an innovative range of products and has become one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of micro:bit accessories.

Commenting on the agreement, Kitronik Co-Founder and Director Kevin Spurr said:

“We have been committed to developing project kits and resources to inspire young people to become interested in electronics and coding for the best part of 15 years and it is amazing to see some of the world’s largest electronics companies supporting our ambition. Having our entire range available through Premier Farnell will help increase access to micro:bit projects for thousands of people of all ages across the globe which is very exciting.”

Jonathan Smith, Head of Education, at Premier Farnell comments:

“We have seen a growth in popularity of the micro:bit over the last 2 years, especially from our education sector customers. However, we know that people do not just want the device, they also want to extend the opportunities to teach and learn by using accessories. It’s not only fun, but it’s is also hugely beneficial for students and supports learning across the curriculum.

“Kitronik has demonstrated that its products are perfect for doing this and are already popular with teachers in numerous countries. We are looking forward to working with them to expand this popularity even further and help more people take up coding and electronics using the micro:bit.”

Kitronik’s range of micro:bit products is available to view on the Premier Farnell website.
