Nuneaton apprentice secures role with leading developer

Nuneaton local lad has been hired by Barratt Homes to complete his carpentry apprenticeship at its Saxon Meadows development in Camp Hill, where he grew up.

Jordan Blount-Hunt (22) has been interested in carpentry since he was in high school and opted to complete his NVQ Level 2 and 3 with Barratt Homes.

In 2011, Jordan was part of the Construction Award Multi Skills Programme (CAMS), funded by Barratt, in which school pupils got to try their hands at home building and renovation. It was from this experience that Jordan found an interest in pursuing a career in construction.

Jordan currently works on site four days a week and spends one day a week studying at North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College.

Jordan said,

“I managed to keep hold of the contacts I had made with Barratt Homes while I was doing the CAMS Programme and thanks to that, I was able to secure an apprenticeship with Barratt Homes.

“I’m enjoying every single aspect of my apprenticeship so far, Barratt is a fantastic housebuilder to do it with as I’m given a great deal of responsibility so I feel like a valued member of the team.

“I’m really grateful for the team that I work with, there’s a big focus on making sure I excel in my role and improve my skills. It’s very hands on learning but that’s exactly what I love about it.”

Camp Hill, once considered one of the most deprived areas in Warwickshire, has gone through a multi-million pound regeneration project over the last 20 years, with over 800 homes built by Barratt Homes alone.

Jordan has lived in Camp Hill all his life and has been contributing to the regeneration of Camp Hill with Barratt Homes Mercia since he was 16, first by working on the Bluebell development and now at Saxon Meadows.

Jordan continued,

“It’s great to be able to contribute to the houses being built in the area that I’ve grown up and still live in. I’ve played an active role in the regeneration of my local area for over five years now, it’s really important to me.”

Once Jordan has completed his NVQ Level 3 in Carpentry, he plans to explore options of owning his own business or potentially furthering his career with Barratt Homes.

Jordan concluded,

“My apprenticeship has taught me invaluable skills and I hope one day I’ll be able to able to move up in my trade or potentially start my own carpentry business.”

Dominic Harman, Managing Director at Barratt Homes Mercia, said,

“It’s great to see apprentices like Jordan excel and enjoy their chosen trade, especially as he’s been contributing to the growth of his local community with us since he was 16.

“The apprenticeships we offer are a fantastic way to learn new skills and pursue a career path by gaining experience and studying alongside it.”
