Lincolnshire entrepreneur named Director of the Year for Innovation

Managing Director of Minster Surfacing, Bruce Spencer-Knott has been named Director of the Year 2019 for Innovation at this year's Institute of Directors East Midlands awards ceremony.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Minster, the Lincolnshire-based civil engineering and road surfacing firm Bruce co-founded in 1999. Minster incorporates waste reduction strategies and recycling technology throughout its work to make road surfacing smarter, cleaner and greener.

The East Midlands IoD Director of the Year Awards is a celebration of leadership talent, success and achievement across Greater Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The event aims to raise awareness of the significant contribution business leaders can make to society and to economic prosperity.

After winning the award at the regional level, Bruce will now go through to the national finals on 18th October.

Minster’s Managing Director, Bruce Spencer-Knott, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have won this award, it’s been a fantastic day and I’d like to thank the judges and everybody at the Institute of Directors.

‘Although it’s my name on the trophy, this is a big achievement for our whole team. We work hard at Minster to carry out our work in a safe and environmentally friendly way so I’m honoured to receive this award in recognition of our efforts. Attending this event also reminds you of just how much talent and creativity there is in the East Midlands with so many other excellent companies and inspiring leaders in the room.

“This year, Minster turns 20 and it’s shaping up to be another great year for the business as work on some of our biggest projects yet. We have lots of exciting plans for the coming months and I couldn’t be happier with this award.”

Hosted by BBC East Midlands Today presenter, Anne Davies at Winstanley House, Leicester, the Institute of Directors East Midlands award ceremony celebrates businesses and business leaders from across the region. The innovation category recognises business leaders who demonstrate outstanding commitment to creativity and new ways of working.

Ron Lynch, IoD East Midlands Regional Director commented: “In a fast-paced and challenging business world it is great to see the effectiveness and entrepreneurial qualities of directors in the East Midlands. We have so many great businesses being run by excellent directors.”

Minster works nationwide for clients including local authorities, major developers and contractors. The company is committed to making road surfacing safer, cleaner and greener by using the latest technology to reduce waste, improve efficiency and recycling.

Later this month, Minster is also a finalist for five national awards in recognition for its work to reduce the carbon footprint of road surfacing and eliminate waste.

As well as continuing to invest in new technology to improve efficiency and safety, Minster is also developing a new system which it hopes will enable it to produce roads that are made from 90% recycled material. Currently, the firm routinely produces roads that are around 50% recycled and it aims to have this new system in-use by the end of the year.
