The five star housebuilders have donated £1,000 to Broxtowe Youth Homelessness (BYH), a charity that aims to help young adults who are without a place to live in the Nottinghamshire area.
The organisation is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year and with the help of the developers’ Community Fund, is hoping to pursue a more preventative approach to help the homeless community.
Abi Garvey, who nominated the charity, said:
“I chose Broxtowe Youth Homelessness as given the prevalence of homelessness at the moment, we need to support all those helping our most vulnerable.”
First created by a local community action group who helped provide accommodation to homeless youngsters, BYH runs a drop-in centre for young people potentially facing housing issues, whilst also offering them training to help maintain their tenancies.
The charity aims to help the community affected successfully move on from homelessness and currently supports over 200 young adults a year.
Chris Southgate, Managing Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes North Midlands, said:
“It’s always wonderful to see how our donations to the local community can help charities and organisations improve and progress.
“As the country’s largest housebuilder, we are committed to creating a positive legacy. We want to lead the industry not just in the quality of the homes and developments we build, but also in our work with charities and good causes throughout the UK.”
Jessica Brennan, Project Manager at BYH, said that the donation from the developers will help meet the increased need for their services as they come to the end of their current funding period.
She said:
“The donation from Barratt and David Wilson Homes will support the young people who attend our drop-in service, whilst also providing them with advice about homelessness and maintaining their tenancies.
“As a small charity, we are extremely honoured to receive such a generous donation from the housebuilders and it is a pleasure to be associated with such a reputable company.
“We’d like to say a big thank you to the developers from all the staff and volunteers at BYH, the support of bigger organisations is greatly appreciated and increases the awareness of our work, as well as making a massive difference to our charity.”
