New ARUP Nottingham office lead appointed

GLOBAL engineering and design consultancy Arup has announced the appointment of John Read as Nottingham office leader following continued growth and diversification within the business.

John joined Arup in 1987, moving to the Nottingham office in 1990 giving him more than 31 years’ experience in leading complex commercial, leisure, education, healthcare, manufacturing, industrial and nuclear projects, both in the UK and overseas.

Speaking of his role, John said:

“I am delighted, following two years leading the team here in an interim capacity, to be appointed as the leader of our Nottingham office. It’s an exciting time in the East Midlands, as more investment and key developments are underway and demand for our services remains strong.

“I would like to thank Robin Lee, who stepped down from leading our Nottingham office in 2017, for his valued contribution to skilfully steering the direction of our office over many years.

“The appointment will mean that I continue to lead on supporting our growing team and our ability to develop new skills and service offerings for our clients. Integration of disciplines is integral to our work at Arup, and we align all our skills to deliver coordinated high-quality projects across Nottingham and the East Midlands, as well as having specialisms here in Nottingham that are valued internationally.”

The growing Arup team in Nottingham has more than doubled in the last five years and is on track to reach 100 employees by the end of this year. Over the last 33 years, Arup has been involved in the design of many key developments in the city and region. Some of its most notable projects in Nottingham include the award-winning 2,500 seat Theatre Royal and Concert Hall, the Market Square Redevelopment, Nottingham Contemporary art gallery, the Inland Revenue Building, the National Ice Arena and the M1 smart motorway upgrade.

Currently John’s team are working on Sandwell aquatics centre, campus buildings at University of Leicester and connecting offshore wind turbines to East Anglia. The team are also involved on major infrastructure projects such as the A417 Link, A465 Heads of the Valley, M56 smart motorway upgrade, Toronto Airport and Montreal Container Terminal.
